Getting started

Does a PAT pass prove a China-bought appliance is safe?

No. A PAT pass records the outcome of the checks performed; it does not establish every aspect of product safety or suitability for your home or club. Ask a competent reviewer to assess the exact appliance, its supporting evidence and intended use before approval. Factory documents and samples can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Establish what the PAT pass actually covers

HSE explains that visual examination finds most electrical safety defects, while some defects require testing. Treat a PAT pass as evidence within the recorded inspection and test scope. Do not infer that it establishes safe internal design, behaviour during overheating or suitability for prolonged shared use.

Request the report behind the sticker. Match the appliance identifier, model, date, supplied lead and adaptor to your equipment. Ask what was visually inspected, which tests were performed, what results and acceptance criteria were recorded, and what was excluded. A pass without a clear scope leaves questions for the reviewer.

Match product evidence to the actual appliance

Give the reviewer photographs of the rating plate, appliance, plug and accessories, together with the English instructions and model-specific product reports. Ask them to reconcile the supply rating, model, construction revision and components across the documents and delivered equipment. Flag missing records, substitutions and unexplained differences before arranging a trial.

Keep import compliance separate from the PAT result. Our electrical import rules guide covers the applicable product regimes, and our markings and certification guide explains the documents. Ask the reviewer whether that evidence covers your exact configuration and intended destination.

Commission review beyond routine appliance testing

Choose a reviewer with experience of the appliance type and ask them to define the assessment scope. The brief should address protection against electric shock, overheating and fire, together with relevant mechanical hazards. Ask about plug and fuse suitability, cable restraint, earthing or insulation arrangements, accessible live parts and protective controls. Leave dismantling and hazardous tests to the specialist.

Ask whether existing evidence adequately addresses temperature rise and foreseeable faults, such as blocked ventilation or failure of a temperature control. Have the reviewer identify any further construction checks or laboratory tests needed and explain their criteria. For chargers and supplied mains adaptors, use our charger insulation guide for the detailed construction brief.

Check the intended home or club arrangement

Describe where the appliance will stand, who will operate it, how long it will run and how it will be cleaned and stored. Ask the reviewer to consider moisture, ventilation, hot surfaces, moving parts, stability and access by children or visitors. Confirm that the instructions and supporting evidence address the planned use, including repeated club use where relevant.

Have a competent electrical contractor assess any concerns about the socket, circuit, extension leads or installation separately. Ask the appliance reviewer to state the supply conditions their conclusion assumes. For club use, follow our shared equipment guide for venue permission, insurer conditions and responsibility for access and maintenance.

Record the decision and control later use

Request a written conclusion identifying the appliance, evidence reviewed, inspection and test scope, unresolved findings and permitted use conditions. As a purchasing and use procedure, keep the appliance out of service while safety concerns remain unresolved. After correction, ask the reviewer what reassessment is needed before approval. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can coordinate factory records and representative samples.

Where workplace duties apply in Great Britain, electrical equipment must be maintained to prevent danger. For practical management at home or in a club, name who checks condition, reports faults and stops use. Agree checks suited to the appliance and its use, and seek review after damage, repair, component changes or a change of location. Keep the PAT record alongside this wider decision.

Frequently asked questions

Is a PAT sticker enough for an appliance bought from China?

No. Obtain the underlying report and check its scope. A pass alone does not establish safe design, matching product evidence or suitability for your intended use.

Can a PAT tester approve an imported appliance's design?

Ask what assessment they can competently perform. Routine inspection and testing may need to be supplemented by an appliance specialist or electrical safety laboratory.

Can my club use a domestic appliance that passed PAT?

Ask a reviewer whether the appliance and its evidence support the planned workload, users and environment. Obtain the venue's and insurer's conditions before approving shared use.

What if the appliance passes PAT but gets unusually hot?

Stop use and arrange a competent review. Describe the operating conditions and provide the test record. Do not keep running it to see whether the problem clears.
