Can mobility scooters go on UK buses and trains?
Acceptance depends on the operator, the actual mobility aid and the journey. Before ordering, send occupied dimensions, combined weight and manoeuvring details to every operator, and check scooter assessment or permit arrangements. Ask Cambridge China Bridge to verify the factory specification against those replies.

Ask about the exact model and journey
Department for Transport guidance says some smaller scooters are accepted on some public transport vehicles, but users must check with the operator. Send each bus and train operator the model designation, photographs, specification and intended route. For a powered wheelchair, ask specifically about travelling while seated in it.
Keep a written reply identifying the configuration and services discussed. Treat a factory's claim of public transport suitability as a prompt for verification. Our personal mobility scooter import guide covers road classification and registration; settle transport acceptance separately.
Measure the occupied vehicle and combined weight
Request a dimensioned drawing showing the vehicle ready for travel, with the intended seating, footrests, headrest, controls and accessories fitted. Record the user's occupied envelope as well as the vehicle dimensions. A carton measurement or folded photograph cannot answer whether someone can travel seated.
Send the measurements below to each operator and ask for its applicable limits, measurement method and confirmation for the intended service. Include the battery, user, fitted equipment and carried belongings in the proposed travelling weight. Keep shipping weight, vehicle weight and user carrying capacity separately labelled.
| Check | Evidence to send |
|---|---|
| Occupied size | Overall length and width, occupied height, and photographs showing projecting feet, controls and accessories |
| Travelling weight | Vehicle weight with battery and equipment, plus user and belongings |
| Manoeuvring | Turning radius with its measurement method, swept path and demonstration video |
| Boarding | Ground clearance, wheel layout and the manufacturer's ramp-use instructions |
Resolve scooter permits and practical assessment
Department for Transport guidance reproduces a voluntary bus code covering pavement-class scooters on suitable low-floor buses. Under that code, scooter users need prior operator approval, a travel permit, assessment and on-bus training. Ask the bus operator whether it follows that code and how to arrange its assessment.
Ask to demonstrate ramp entry, turning, positioning in the designated space and exit with the intended user. Agree the manoeuvres with the operator and manufacturer before attempting them. Ask each connecting operator whether it recognises the permit, and ask train operators separately about their scooter arrangements. Do not assume a scooter permit answers a powered-wheelchair enquiry.
Check the whole interchange
Create a journey sheet covering outward and return travel, every operator, boarding stop, station entrance, platform change and destination exit. Ask about usable ramps, lift dimensions and load limits, narrow approaches, turning space and the route between connecting services. Ask who will arrange boarding and alighting assistance.
Check what happens if the designated space is occupied, a lift fails, the vehicle changes or a rail replacement bus is used. Ask whether the proposed alternative can carry the same occupied mobility aid. Recheck arrangements before travel and keep an alternative journey plan that suits the user's needs.

Make acceptance a purchasing condition
Before paying, assemble the operator replies, measurement sheet, photographs and unresolved assessment conditions. If an operator needs a physical trial, agree how to obtain a representative sample and what happens if it fails. Avoid promising customers network-wide acceptance from a specification review alone.
Freeze the approved battery, seating, controller, wheel layout and accessories in the order. Ask Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China to check the finished configuration against that specification before shipment. Use our wheelchair and scooter sourcing guide for product checks and test report verification guide for document checks.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take a mobility scooter bought from China on a bus?
Check with the bus operator before ordering. Send the exact model, occupied measurements, combined weight and route, then ask about approval, assessment and a scooter permit.
What size powered wheelchair can go on a train?
Ask the intended train operator for its dimensional and weight limits. Send occupied measurements with footrests, controls and accessories included, and check boarding and interchange access.
Will my scooter permit cover connecting services?
Ask every connecting operator whether it recognises the permit for your scooter and intended service. Check train arrangements separately and keep the replies with your journey plan.
Does a folding scooter guarantee train acceptance?
Do not buy on that assumption. Ask whether it would travel occupied or as luggage, what folding and handling are expected, and whether the user can safely manage the proposed arrangement.
