Buying a mixed lighting range from China
Build a model register that separates fittings, light sources and drivers. Map the applicable rules, approve the actual combinations, and check heat, flicker, dimming and colour before production. Link spares and shipment release to those approvals. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate this work with its own staff in China.

Choose the architecture before comparing quotes
Define the intended use, installation, appearance and repair route for each lighting family. Record whether a lamp is included, whether the light source can be removed, and whether the driver is built in or separate. Integrated LEDs and separate drivers can coexist in the same fitting, so these are configuration choices rather than mutually exclusive product categories.
Use the commercial lighting guide for the underlying specification. Add a range register linking each saleable model to its fitting, light source, driver, controls and approved sample. Compare servicing effort and replacement availability alongside the purchase quote.
| Configuration | Buying consideration | Approval focus |
|---|---|---|
| Replaceable-lamp fitting | Customers can change the lamp, but lamp selection affects the result. | Lamp holder, permitted lamp characteristics, clearance and the supplied lamp if included. |
| Integrated LED fitting | Light source and optics are matched to the fitting; establish the repair route. | Exact light source, enclosure, thermal arrangement and removal method. |
| Separate driver | An accessible driver can simplify servicing, but matching needs more than the same wattage. | Output type, current or voltage, operating range, connectors, dimming method and installation space. |
Map safety and energy evidence separately
Start with the electrical and electronic section of the OPSS industry guidance. Map electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility to each configuration; identify radio-equipped models separately. The electrical import rules guide covers the existing safety, plug, hazardous-substance, waste, battery and connected-product duties. Keep a model-specific record of applicability, evidence, unresolved questions and the person responsible.
For Great Britain, ask your compliance reviewer to classify the light source, separate control gear and containing product, checking scope and exemptions before approving artwork. Request an ecodesign assessment as well as safety evidence: a declaration of conformity must be supported by technical documentation. For products within energy-information scope, suppliers must produce energy labels and fiches with supporting technical documentation. Record the required energy-information deliverables against the relevant model rather than copying artwork across the range.
Test the combinations customers will use
Approve the fitting, lamp or LED module, driver and control together. Ask a competent laboratory to assess safety and thermal behaviour in the intended mounting arrangement, including enclosed spaces where relevant. Investigate heat-related shutdown, discolouration, damaged insulation and unstable output. A cool showroom demonstration does not establish performance after sustained operation.
Check flicker at full output and through the intended dimming range, including starting, low-level operation, buzzing and unexpected switch-off. A phone video can flag a concern but cannot replace instrument measurements. Compare samples side by side for colour temperature, tint and colour rendering, then repeat after warm-up. Agree measured acceptance criteria and named compatible dimmers before approving claims.
Approve models and compatible spares together
Give each approved configuration a revision record linking the sample, component list, drawings, reports, declaration, instructions and artwork. Ask the reviewer which variants the evidence covers and which need further assessment. Require written approval before changing the driver, LED module, optics, enclosure or thermal materials. Follow the sample-to-production guide for the factory handoff.
Create a spare-parts compatibility list rather than ordering generic drivers by wattage. Check electrical output, dimming interface, connector polarity, physical fit and thermal suitability. Record who can replace the part and how to access it safely. Trial the replacement in the approved fitting, agree how discontinued parts will be handled, and keep substitutes pending until reviewed and tested.

Release the shipment against the range register
Make shipment readiness a model-by-model decision. Match production component identities and revision records to the approvals, then reconcile inspection results, labels, instructions, energy-information files, carton contents and spare-part references. Keep unresolved models on hold rather than treating approval of a related fitting as approval of the entire range.
Give the buyer, factory and China team the same release register, with an owner and closure evidence for every outstanding item. Check that mixed cartons and separately packed drivers can be identified and matched on arrival. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate factory follow-up, sample checks and consolidation with its own staff in China; the buyer should retain the approval and release records for reorders and fault investigations.
Frequently asked questions
Should I buy replaceable lamps or integrated LEDs?
Choose by intended use and servicing needs. Replaceable lamps allow lamp changes; integrated LEDs need an agreed module or fitting replacement route. Approve the actual lighting combination.
Can lighting models share the same driver?
Only after compatibility checks. Match output type, operating range, dimming interface, connectors, physical fit and thermal behaviour. Equal wattage alone is insufficient.
Does every light fitting need the same energy label?
Do not copy a label across the range. Have each model classified as a light source, control gear or containing product, then confirm scope and the model-specific energy-information deliverables.
What should stop a lighting shipment?
Unapproved component changes, unresolved test failures, mismatched evidence or missing agreed labels, instructions and spares should keep the affected model on hold until closure is recorded.
