Manual wheelchair from China: clinician checks
Agree a written brief with a UK wheelchair clinician covering individual fit, seating and pressure needs, a trial and acceptance plan, exact model evidence, and named local adjustment and repair support. Resolve gaps before ordering. Give the agreed factory specification to Cambridge China Bridge.

Agree an individual assessment and written brief
Before asking the factory to build, arrange an assessment with a UK wheelchair clinician or suitably experienced specialist. MHRA's checklist asks whether a risk assessment has been done and whether risks can be minimised. Agree who will assess suitability, review the proposed chair and check the delivered configuration. For a business buying for named users, record individual needs rather than assigning everyone the same catalogue chair.
Describe self-propelling or attendant use, transfers, sitting time, indoor access, outdoor surfaces, storage and transport. Ask the specialist to consider posture, movement, sensation, hand function and carer capabilities. Put the resulting requirements in a written brief. Our wheelchair sourcing guide covers the broader import and product checks.
Turn fit into a configuration the factory can build
Ask the specialist to specify seat width and depth, seat height with the chosen cushion, back support, footrest position, arm support and permitted adjustment ranges. Record how measurements are taken and which refer to the user or the finished chair. Confirm the user weight limit, overall access dimensions and which parts must move or detach for transfers.
Agree wheel and axle settings, propulsion reach, brake access and any anti-tip equipment with the specialist. Ask what can be adjusted locally within the manufacturer's instructions and what needs factory approval. Arrange a representative trial where possible. If the exact configuration cannot be trialled, ask the clinician to identify what remains uncertain before committing to production.
Specify seating and pressure care together
Ask the clinician to assess pressure risk, skin history, sensation and postural support needs, then specify the cushion, cover, seat base and back support as a combination. Do not select by the factory's comfort description alone. Ask whether a specialist seating assessment or pressure mapping would help, and what evidence would justify accepting the proposed combination.
Agree an individual plan for repositioning or pressure relief, skin monitoring, cushion care and review. Ask the clinician to explain warning signs and what the user or carer should do if they appear. Record who approves cushion substitutions and seating changes. A factory inspection checks the supplied build; it cannot establish an individual's clinical suitability.
Give the specialist evidence for the exact equipment
Send the manufacturer identity, exact model and revision, configuration drawing, English instructions, adjustment limits and full test reports to the specialist before ordering. Ask the factory to show whether the reports cover the chosen frame, user weight limit, wheels and fitted accessories. Use our test report verification guide for authenticity and coverage checks, and our medical products guide for the separate regulatory work.
Ask the specialist which evidence they need to judge stability, braking, strength and seating compatibility. If the user may travel seated in the chair, identify that use explicitly and request evidence and instructions covering the chair, seating and restraint arrangement. Agree that unexplained evidence gaps or unapproved substitutions stop order approval.

Confirm local fitting, repairs and acceptance
Before paying, ask a named UK provider to confirm they will assess, adjust and repair this particular imported model. Clarify whether they accept privately purchased equipment, what documentation and parts they need, and who pays for appointments, labour, travel and freight. Do not assume the user's existing wheelchair service will support it. Use our spare-parts support guide to agree the factory supply route.
Agree who checks the delivered chair against the brief, fits the seating, teaches the user and carer, and records final settings. Set acceptance criteria for posture, propulsion, transfers and access, with a plan if the chair fails them. Arrange maintenance, an urgent fault contact, alternative mobility during repairs and reassessment when needs change. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can coordinate factory checks against the agreed specification.
Frequently asked questions
Can I order a manual wheelchair using body measurements?
Measurements are only part of the brief. Ask a wheelchair clinician to assess posture, propulsion, transfers, seating and pressure needs, then specify the chair and its adjustment ranges.
Does CE or UKCA marking prove a wheelchair fits me?
Marking does not establish individual fit or pressure suitability. Agree a clinical assessment, seating choice and trial or acceptance plan for the exact configuration.
Can I use the cushion supplied by the Chinese factory?
Ask the clinician to assess the proposed cushion, cover and seat base together. Agree evidence, a trial where appropriate and approval of substitutions before accepting the factory's choice.
Will my local wheelchair service repair an imported chair?
Ask the service before ordering. Obtain confirmation for the exact model, including permitted adjustments, available parts, charges and urgent fault support. Arrange alternative mobility during repairs.
