Should I pay my credit card during a dispute?
Keep making the payments your issuer requires unless it confirms a different arrangement in writing. Do not assume a missing-goods or faulty-goods dispute pauses repayments, interest or credit reporting. Ask for the disputed balance and the remaining bill to be explained separately. Factory evidence can be organised with Cambridge China Bridge.

Confirm what is due before changing payments
This guide concerns a personal purchase from China paid for with a UK credit card, including a business owner's private purchase. Tell the issuer whether the goods are missing or faulty, identify the transaction and request a dispute reference. Keep the supplier complaint moving alongside the card dispute.
Ask the issuer to confirm the payment amount and due date while it investigates, including how it treats the disputed purchase and unrelated spending. Until it confirms a change, keep following its payment instructions. Do not cancel a direct debit solely because you have opened a dispute; ask whether an agreed change will alter the collection.
Get a usable repayment arrangement in writing
If you want the disputed amount excluded from repayments, request that explicitly. Ask for written confirmation identifying the transaction, the balance covered, what remains payable, when the arrangement starts and when it ends or is reviewed. A message saying the claim is being investigated leaves these questions unanswered.
After a telephone conversation, send a written account of what you understood and ask the issuer to confirm it. Compare the confirmation with the next statement and direct-debit notice. If they conflict, request corrected payment instructions before the due date. If you cannot afford the required payment, explain that promptly and seek debt advice.
Separate repayment relief from interest treatment
Ask whether interest and fees on the disputed purchase will stop, continue or be considered for refund after the decision. Request the effective date and treatment of interest already charged. Separately ask how the arrangement affects interest on unrelated spending and any promotional terms. Do not treat permission to defer payment as confirmation that interest has stopped.
Keep statements showing the original purchase, payments, interest and fees. Ask how payments will be allocated between disputed and undisputed balances. When the claim ends, request an account reconciliation explaining the refund, any interest adjustment and what remains due. Challenge unexplained differences with the relevant statement entries.
Check whether a credit is temporary or final
When a credit appears, ask whether it is provisional or a final refund, whether the dispute remains open and how it changes the next payment and direct debit. Request written details of what happens to repayments and interest if the credit is reversed. Keep enough room in your budget for that possibility.
For answering a supplier's defence after reversal, use our reversed chargeback guide. Tell the issuer about any separate supplier or platform refund and ask how it will reconcile the entries; our supplier refund during a chargeback guide covers that situation.

Agree credit reporting and challenge errors
Ask what the issuer will report to credit reference agencies during the arrangement, including whether it will record missed payments, arrears or an arrangement to pay. Request confirmation that specifically addresses reporting, rather than relying on a general promise to put the account on hold. Check your credit reports against the written arrangement and payment receipts; do not assume a repayment concession also settles reporting.
If an entry appears inconsistent, send the issuer and the credit reference agency the entry, arrangement and payment evidence, and request investigation and correction. Complain through the issuer's complaints procedure about unresolved handling failures, identifying the remedy you want. GOV.UK says you can usually take the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service if you are unhappy with the response. Continue checking what is payable while complaining.
Frequently asked questions
Can I stop paying while my card dispute is open?
Keep following the issuer's payment instructions unless it confirms a different arrangement in writing. Ask what is due on both the disputed purchase and the rest of the account.
Does a payment pause also stop interest?
Do not assume so. Ask separately whether interest stops, continues or may be refunded later, and get the effective date and treatment of existing charges in writing.
Does a temporary credit mean I have won?
Ask whether the credit is provisional or final and whether the dispute remains open. Confirm the next payment and what repayments and interest would apply if the credit were reversed.
Will the dispute affect my credit file?
Ask the issuer what it will report during any payment arrangement. Check your reports against its written confirmation and payment receipts, and request investigation of inconsistent entries.
