Can I fit China-bought switches and sockets myself?
Only if you are competent for the work and have settled the applicable building-control route. Buying a compliant product does not settle installation approval. Get an electrician to review the exact products before purchase, especially a consumer unit. Factory documents can be gathered by Cambridge China Bridge.

Get the electrician's acceptance before ordering
Send your proposed electrician the exact model, drawings, ratings, installation instructions and product-specific test reports. Ask whether they will install these customer-supplied products, what evidence they need and what would cause rejection. Get their response in writing before paying the factory. Keep product compliance separate from the installation decision; our electrical import rules guide covers the import side.
For switches and sockets, ask about mounting boxes, terminal capacity, earthing, plug compatibility and suitability for the intended load. For a consumer unit, request review of the complete assembly, enclosure, protective devices and compatibility with the existing installation. Do not approve a box merely because its breakers appear familiar. Agree that substitutions need fresh review.
Decide whether you should do the work
HSE says you can do your own electrical work if you are competent to do so. Treat competence as specific to the task: fitting an accessory, replacing a consumer unit and inspecting an installation call for different capabilities. If you cannot safely assess, isolate, install and test the proposed work, appoint an electrician.
Do not buy on the assumption that an electrician will later certify whatever you install. Agree who will design, install, inspect and test the work before it starts. Ask the electrician to identify any existing wiring or earthing issues that could prevent acceptance of the imported products.
Settle notification before starting
GOV.UK lists replacing fuse boxes and connected electrics among alterations that may need building regulations approval. Do not treat a consumer unit replacement as equivalent to changing a switch faceplate. Give building control the actual scope, including any new circuit, moved socket or work near a bath or shower, and ask how it should be classified.
For England, official guidance tells a person doing their own work to contact a building control body before starting if notification is needed. An installer registered with a relevant competent person scheme can self-certify their own work within its scope. Check the installer's registration and ask who will handle notification; record the agreed route in the installation quotation.
Check the rules for the property's UK nation
Identify whether the property is in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, and whether the work concerns a home, business premises or a mixed-use building. GOV.UK says Scotland and Northern Ireland have different rules. Give the local council your address, building use and proposed work rather than asking only whether Chinese products are allowed.
For England, ask building control about the domestic electrical guidance where relevant. For Wales, request the current Welsh requirements rather than relying on an English checklist. For Scotland, ask the council's building standards team whether a warrant is needed. For Northern Ireland, ask the district council's building control team about the applicable approval route. Obtain the answer before committing to the order.

Agree the certificates and keep the handover file
England's Approved Document P says non-notifiable electrical installation work should still be designed, installed, inspected, tested and certificated in accordance with the wiring standard it cites. Ask which electrical installation certificate or minor works certificate is appropriate, and whether separate building regulations paperwork will be provided. Put the document names and responsible parties in the agreed scope.
Keep the accepted specification, product reports, installation records, test results and any building-control paperwork together. Factory reports concern the product; they do not record testing of your completed wiring. Use our test report verification guide and supplier certificates guide when reviewing the factory's evidence. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can gather documents and check goods against the agreed specification.
Frequently asked questions
Can I replace a China-bought socket myself?
Only if you are competent for the task and have checked the applicable building-control route. Ask what inspection, testing and certification the work needs before starting.
Will an electrician fit a consumer unit I bought from China?
Ask before buying. Send the complete assembly specification and reports, and get written acceptance of the exact products and installation scope. Do not assume acceptance from photographs.
Does CE marking replace an installation certificate?
No. Product documents and installation records answer different questions. Agree the inspection, testing and paperwork for the completed installation separately.
Are electrical installation rules the same across the UK?
Check the property's nation. GOV.UK identifies different rules in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Ask the relevant council about your actual scope, and request Welsh requirements for work in Wales.
