China-bought acoustic panels: home safety checks
Before fitting China-bought acoustic foam or decorative sound panels, match the fire evidence to the complete mounted assembly, confirm the adhesive and fixing method, and get advice for the intended room. Hold installation if the documents cover different materials or mounting. For factory-side checks, contact Cambridge China Bridge.

Describe the room and the proposed installation
Give your installer or fire-safety adviser photographs and a layout showing the room's use, proposed coverage, wall or ceiling position, escape route, heaters, lighting and sockets. Identify whether this is a bedroom, home studio, kitchen, hallway or shared area in a block of flats. Ask whether the proposal is suitable before ordering or opening the adhesive.
Approved Document B is fire-safety guidance for England. Its dwelling guidance says wall and ceiling surface linings should meet the specified classifications. Ask your adviser which guidance and classification apply to your location and installation, and whether building control involvement is needed. For product declarations and marking, use our construction-materials guide.
Match fire evidence to the complete mounted system
Request the full fire test and classification reports, including specimen descriptions, mounting drawings and the stated scope of use. Compare the foam or panel core, thickness, density, fabric, felt, veneer, coating and backing with your order. Then compare the supporting wall or ceiling material, adhesive, fixings, joints, orientation and any air gap. Evidence for a facing fabric alone leaves the rest of the assembly unchecked.
Ask a competent fire-safety adviser to confirm that the evidence covers the proposed assembly, including any permitted variations. Do not assume a directly bonded specimen covers panels on battens, or that wall mounting covers ceiling mounting. Hold installation if the scope is unclear. Our guide to matching reports to ordered goods covers the wider document comparison.
Check the adhesive as part of the specification
Obtain the exact adhesive name, technical instructions and SDS where available. HSE advises checking the label or asking for a safety data sheet if the solvent content is unclear. Ask the panel and adhesive suppliers to confirm compatibility with the foam, backing and wall finish, along with application method, curing conditions and safe room reoccupation. Follow the product-specific ventilation and ignition precautions.
Keep the adhesive and its application pattern consistent with the assembly accepted by your adviser. Put substitutions through review rather than choosing a convenient spray glue or mounting tape. Trial adhesion on an offcut and a representative surface to check damage and bond strength; this is not a fire test. For ceiling panels, have the installer specify secure support rather than assuming a wall adhesive is suitable overhead.
Ask for advice on the intended room
For bedrooms and enclosed studios, ask about both the finished installation and safe occupancy while the adhesive cures. For kitchens or positions near heaters and hot lighting, ask whether the proposed material and location are suitable. For hallways, stairs and shared areas, obtain advice specific to the escape route. Send the proposed coverage and mounting details rather than asking whether the product is generally safe.
Ask an acoustic adviser whether the layout will address your actual problem, such as echo within the room or noise reaching neighbouring rooms. Do not buy on a 'soundproof' description alone. Keep vents, alarms, sockets and access points unobstructed. In a rented home or managed flat, check the proposed alterations with the landlord or building manager before fitting.

Release installation only when the evidence matches
Verify report authenticity with the issuing laboratory using independently obtained contact details. A seller's flame demonstration, a 'fireproof' description or a certificate cover page is not enough to make your installation decision. Use our test-report verification guide for the authenticity checks, then have your adviser resolve any mismatch between the evidence and the proposed assembly.
On delivery, compare labels, batch details, materials and supplied adhesive with the accepted specification. Keep reports, instructions, the adviser's written conclusion and photographs of the mounting before it is concealed. Ask before painting, replacing a facing or changing the mounting later. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can help obtain factory documents and check the supplied goods; room suitability needs advice for the property.
Frequently asked questions
Is acoustic foam labelled fire retardant safe at home?
The label alone is insufficient. Ask for full fire evidence matching the material and mounted assembly, then obtain advice for the intended room before fitting.
Does a fabric fire certificate cover the whole panel?
Do not assume it does. Check whether the evidence includes the core, backing, adhesive, supporting surface and mounting arrangement you intend to use.
Can I use any glue to mount acoustic foam?
Use an adhesive confirmed as compatible with the foam and surface, and covered by the accepted assembly evidence. Check its instructions and safety information before application.
Can I fit acoustic panels in a hallway or bedroom?
Get advice for that room, proposed coverage and mounting. Highlight escape routes, sleeping use, heat sources and ventilation rather than relying on a general supplier assurance.
