Getting started

Import assembled goods or components for UK assembly?

Import assembled goods when factory assembly and finished-product testing outweigh the freight saving from shipping parts. Choose UK assembly when proven packing savings or late configuration justify local labour, equipment and final checks. Compare cost per accepted finished unit with Cambridge China Bridge.

Compare the same finished product

Ask for alternative quotes against the same finished specification: assembled and packed in China, or components packed for UK assembly. Include factory packing, freight, handling, UK assembly, testing, repacking, rejected parts and rework. Compare cost per accepted finished unit, rather than a component price against an assembled price.

Keep configuration, finish and acceptance criteria identical so the comparison isolates assembly location. Our multiple-factory guide covers supplier interfaces and handovers; here the decision is whether moving assembly to the UK improves the complete result.

Prove the freight saving with packed samples

Components may nest or pack flat, while assembled goods may contain empty space. But separate protection, fittings cartons and pallets can absorb the saving. Ask for a trial packing layout showing external carton dimensions, gross weight, pallet arrangement and usable quantities for each route.

Give both layouts to the forwarder for comparable quotations, including handling and delivery. Check whether freight is driven by volume, weight or awkward dimensions. Include UK repacking materials and disposal in the comparison. Use container fit planning for the loading calculation.

Price UK labour and configuration together

Have the intended UK assembler build a trial from production-intent parts. Record receiving, sorting, assembly, adjustment, testing and packing time, including supervision and stoppages. Obtain a quote covering equipment, workspace, consumables, training and rework. Confirm capacity against the expected arrival and dispatch pattern.

UK assembly can postpone choices such as accessories, finishes or customer-specific fittings, provided the design supports them. Balance this flexibility against component stock, missing-part delays and configuration errors. Identify which choices can remain open and which require a separate technical review before release.

Assess the finished configuration for UK compliance

For assembled imports, review evidence for the exact supplied model and configuration before shipment. Confirm with the relevant product safety authority what manufacturers and importers need to provide to demonstrate compliance with applicable safety requirements. For UK assembly, name the business responsible for the finished product and agree its assessment plan before ordering components.

A finished product must comply with applicable legislation when placed on the Great Britain market. Components sold separately can also be finished products in their own right. Ask a product compliance adviser which requirements apply to the incoming components and the assembled product; do not assume component reports establish finished-product compliance.

Conformity assessment may be performed by the manufacturer for some products, while others need an independent, accredited organisation. Agree the assessment route, evidence and finished configuration before choosing an assembly location. Our electrical import guide covers category-specific checks. Specify whether sales are in Great Britain or Northern Ireland when requesting advice.

Run a trial and define the release gate

Separate component acceptance, assembly workmanship checks and finished-product testing. For assembled imports, agree factory final checks before dispatch and arrival checks for transport damage. For UK assembly, inspect incoming parts and test completed units after assembly. Ask the laboratory to review whether existing reports cover the chosen configuration and where further evidence is needed.

Approve the route after reviewing packing evidence, assembler trial results, freight quotations and the compliance plan. Record the permitted configurations, test criteria, batch traceability and who can release finished stock. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can coordinate component packing and factory checks against the agreed route.

Frequently asked questions

Is importing components cheaper than finished goods?

Only if freight and configuration benefits exceed UK assembly, equipment, testing, packing and rework costs. Compare cost per accepted finished unit using trial packing and assembler evidence.

How do I compare freight for assembled goods and parts?

Request packed samples or trial layouts for both routes. Give the forwarder carton dimensions, gross weights, pallet layouts and usable quantities, then compare quotations on the same delivery basis.

Do component test reports cover the assembled product?

Do not assume they do. Ask the laboratory to assess the final configuration and identify evidence gaps, including changes to connections, enclosure, materials or intended use.

When is final assembly in the UK worth considering?

When parts pack efficiently or customer choices can be delayed until assembly, and a UK trial proves the labour, capacity and final checks are workable. Agree the compliance plan before committing.
