Buying a home sunbed or tanning lamp from China
Check health warnings before deciding to buy, then verify the exact machine and lamps, have an electrician assess the home supply, and plan how to exclude children. A conformity mark does not establish that tanning is harmless. Arrange factory evidence checks with Cambridge China Bridge.

Start with health advice
HSE warns that any exposure to radiation from tanning equipment is potentially harmful. UK health advice says not to use a sunbed if you have very fair skin, burn easily in the sun or have had skin cancer. Home use does not remove those concerns.
Read the proposed manual before ordering. Ask a clinician or pharmacist about medical conditions, medicines or creams that could affect your suitability. HSE advises never using tanning equipment without eye protection. Ask for the specification and instructions for suitable protective goggles.
Challenge claims that tanning is harmless
Government guidance links sunbed use to increased skin cancer risk and other health problems. Treat claims such as ‘safe tanning’, ‘healthy tanning’ or ‘no risk of burning’ as reasons to stop and investigate. Ask the supplier for the precise claim and its supporting evidence.
Do not accept CE or UKCA marking as proof that cosmetic tanning is harmless. Keep the advert, model details and supplier replies together. Our guide to reporting misleading adverts explains the complaint route if the seller will not resolve a questionable claim.
Have the home installation assessed before ordering
Send a qualified electrician the rating plate, total electrical load, supply requirements, wiring diagram and installation manual. Ask whether the proposed household circuit is suitable, whether a dedicated circuit or fixed connection is needed, and what isolation and protective arrangements to specify. Do this before paying a deposit.
Ask the factory to confirm the connection supplied, earthing arrangements, ventilation clearances and maintenance access. Do not plan around a travel adaptor or extension lead. Our electrical import guide covers the wider product duties and UK plug checks; use it alongside the installation assessment.
Match the lamps to the tested machine
HSE guidance says the manufacturer's operating information should identify the correct lamps and maintenance regime. Request lamp manufacturer and model details, electrical ratings, ultraviolet output characteristics, ballast compatibility and any filters. Ask for written confirmation that the supplied configuration matches the test reports and operating instructions.
Do not approve a replacement merely because it fits the holder or has the same wattage. Require written compatibility confirmation and an assessment of whether exposure instructions need changing. Use our test-report verification guide to check report authenticity and model coverage. Put lamp substitutions through buyer approval before shipment.

Prevent child access and check the delivered controls
Plan to keep children out of the room during operation and prevent them switching the equipment on. Ask about a key-operated control, secure key storage and a lockable room. Do not rely on a warning label or a timer as the only access control.
Have a competent person check the delivered timer, stop control, cooling, covers and access controls against the agreed specification without exposing anyone to tanning radiation. Confirm that instructions explain shutdown, faults and lamp replacement. Hold the order if the factory cannot resolve missing warnings, undocumented lamps or installation questions.
Frequently asked questions
Is a home sunbed safer than a salon sunbed?
Home use does not remove the radiation risk. HSE warns that any exposure from tanning equipment is potentially harmful. Assess health suitability before deciding to buy.
Does CE marking mean a tanning lamp is safe to use?
A conformity mark does not establish that tanning is harmless. Check evidence for the exact equipment and lamp configuration, the warnings and the installation instructions.
Can I fit any replacement tanning tube?
Do not choose by size or wattage alone. Get written compatibility confirmation covering the machine, ballast, filters and output, and ask whether exposure instructions need reassessment.
How do I stop children using a home sunbed?
Keep children out during operation and prevent unauthorised switching on. Plan a lockable room, controlled keys and secure isolation arrangements with the installer. Check the controls on delivery.
