Buying a China-made flood barrier for a UK home
Start with an independent property-level flood survey, then match the proposed barrier, fixings and seals to independent performance evidence. Check who can deploy it, preserve safe escape access and address water entering elsewhere. Coordinate the factory specification with Cambridge China Bridge.

Survey the property before choosing a barrier
Commission an independent flood specialist to assess the whole property before requesting a factory quote. Defra's homeowner guidance describes combining existing flood-risk information with an on-site survey. Ask about previous flooding, likely water depth, duration, flow, warning availability, building construction and household mobility. A doorway measurement alone does not provide this assessment.
Request a written plan identifying protected openings, other entry routes, residual risk and any need for structural advice. Ask the specialist to define a safe protection level for the building rather than choosing the tallest available panel. Use the relevant local flood guidance for the property's UK nation, and explain whether occupants may be away when flooding starts.
Check independent evidence for the complete system
Request the complete independent laboratory report, not just a certificate image or demonstration video. Ask your specialist which performance standard and edition suit the proposed use. Have them compare tested water depth, exposure duration, leakage, flow or wave conditions and exclusions with the property assessment. Ask what the evidence leaves untested.
Match the tested model, opening width, panel arrangement, joints, seals, posts, anchors and supporting surface to the proposed order. Ask the laboratory or certificate issuer to confirm authenticity and scope directly. Our report verification guide explains that check; our report coverage guide helps identify differences between tested samples and ordered goods.
Confirm the fixing and sealing surfaces
Have the installer inspect the actual jambs, threshold and surrounding wall. Record uneven paving, cracks, loose render, hollow areas, drainage channels and door-frame condition. Ask where loads will transfer and whether the proposed substrate and anchors match the tested installation. Require written acceptance of the fixing design; do not assume a door frame or surface finish can support it.
Agree preparation work, anchor locations, sealing details and manufacturing measurements before production. Check that the bottom seal can contact the entire threshold and that water cannot bypass the side posts. Arrange a trial fit and a specialist-approved commissioning check after installation. Avoid improvised ponding tests that load the building without a reviewed method.
Practise deployment and preserve escape access
Ask the intended users to rehearse retrieving, carrying and fitting the barrier in dry conditions. Include tools, keys, tightening steps, seal checks and poor lighting. Record the actual deployment time and compare it with the available warning. Agree who acts when occupants are absent and how seals, fixings and replacement parts will be maintained.
Walk through escape access with the barrier fitted. Ask the specialist to assess door operation, trip hazards, mobility needs and a safe alternative route. Plan to leave before access becomes unsafe; do not rely on removing a loaded barrier during flooding. Government guidance says a severe flood warning means danger to life. Follow evacuation instructions and do not enter flood water to deploy equipment.

Address bypass routes and keep a handover file
The Environment Agency says flood water cannot be completely excluded. Ask the surveyor to trace entry through air bricks, walls, floors, service penetrations, neighbouring spaces, groundwater and backed-up drainage. Agree complementary measures and how normal ventilation will be restored after temporary covers are removed. Have a specialist assess any pump, power supply and discharge arrangement.
Before releasing the order, obtain an agreed drawing, component list, installation method, evidence schedule and household deployment plan. Require review before the factory changes seals, anchors or panel construction. Keep installation photographs, commissioning results and maintenance instructions. Ask your insurer what records it needs using our home insurance guide. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can help gather factory documents against the agreed specification.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a flood survey before buying a barrier?
Commission an independent property-level assessment before ordering. Ask it to cover flood conditions, construction, other entry routes, household needs and the building's safe protection level.
What test evidence should a Chinese flood barrier have?
Ask for a complete independent report for the proposed system. Have a specialist check the test conditions, leakage, limitations and coverage of the exact panels, seals, fixings and supporting surface.
Can I attach a flood barrier to my existing door frame?
Have the installer assess the frame, wall and threshold and accept the fixing design in writing. Match anchors and supporting surfaces to the performance evidence before manufacturing.
Will a doorway flood barrier keep all water out?
Water may enter elsewhere. Ask the surveyor to assess walls, floors, vents, service openings, groundwater and drainage backflow, then agree complementary measures and a safe escape plan.
