Can adaptation grants cover equipment from China?
Possibly, but do not treat a China quotation as evidence of funding eligibility. Confirm your nation's scheme, assessed needs, acceptance of the exact supplier and model, complete installed costs and written approval before committing money. Ask for factory specifications through Cambridge China Bridge.

Start with the scheme for your UK nation
In England and Wales, you can apply to your local council for a Disabled Facilities Grant. Scotland does not offer that grant: ask your council about equipment and adaptation support instead. In Northern Ireland, a Disabled Facilities Grant from the Housing Executive can help adapt a home. Ask which route applies to your ownership or tenancy arrangements.
Before discussing factories, ask the scheme administrator to confirm the application route, financial assessment, your contribution, funding limit and payment conditions. Describe whether you need loose equipment, fixed fittings or building alterations, and ask which service should assess and fund each part.
Get the assessed need into a product specification
For council grant applications, the council may send an occupational therapist or trained assessor to assess the changes needed. Request an assessment before choosing a factory model. Ask the assessor to describe the functions, dimensions, controls and user needs that the proposed adaptation should meet.
Send the assessor and proposed installer the exact model drawings, operating information and property measurements. Ask them to review transfers, reach, clearances and installation interfaces. For lifting equipment, use our home lift specialist checks alongside the funding enquiry.
Confirm acceptance of the supplier and installation
Ask the administrator explicitly whether it would accept a direct overseas purchase, a UK supplier sourcing from China, or equipment supplied through its chosen contractor. Request written confirmation for the named seller, exact model and installation arrangement. Neither a factory's assurance nor an assessor's interest should be treated as funding approval.
Name who will import, deliver, install, commission and maintain the equipment. Ask what product documents, insurance, warranty and local repair arrangements the administrator and installer want to see. For rented or leasehold property, also use our landlord permission guide to prepare the separate property enquiry.
Submit comparable quotations for the complete job
Ask how many quotations are needed, who must obtain them and whether a nominated contractor or procurement route applies. Give each bidder the same assessed specification. Ask how the scheme would assess a preferred model that costs more, and obtain a written breakdown of any amount you would fund yourself.
Separate equipment, freight, customs clearance, duty, VAT, delivery, building work, installation and commissioning. Identify exclusions and ask which costs the award would cover. Compare the completed installation rather than the factory price alone. Check tax eligibility separately using our disability equipment import relief guide.

Get written approval before committing money
For council Disabled Facilities Grants, government guidance warns that starting property work before approval may mean receiving no grant. As a purchasing precaution, also hold off on deposits, binding orders and authorising manufacture until the administrator confirms in writing that the proposed commitment fits the approved funding arrangements.
Ask the approval to identify the accepted specification, supplier, eligible costs, your contribution, payment recipient and completion conditions. Confirm whether advance factory payments can be funded and who bridges any cash gap. Obtain written agreement before changing models or suppliers. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can gather factory evidence for that review.
Frequently asked questions
Will a grant pay for equipment made in China?
Do not assume it will. Ask the scheme administrator to accept the exact model, seller, installation arrangement and costs in writing before committing money.
Can I pay a factory deposit while waiting for approval?
Hold the deposit until the administrator confirms the funding and payment arrangements in writing. Ask explicitly about deposits and authorising manufacture.
How many quotations do I need for adaptation funding?
Ask your scheme administrator for its quotation requirements and procurement route. Obtain comparable prices against the same assessed specification, including installation and import costs.
Does disability VAT relief mean the council will fund it?
Treat them as separate checks. Confirm tax eligibility for the import, then obtain funding approval for the specified equipment and complete installation.
