Fold-down wall beds: what should my installer check?

Before ordering, have your UK installer review the exact bed, mattress, counterbalance, locks and anchorage against a survey of your wall. Agree evidence for controlled movement and trapping risks, then obtain written installation approval. Factory evidence can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Give the installer the complete proposed configuration

Send drawings, assembly instructions, mechanism details, mattress limits and proposed fixing positions before ordering. Include the cabinet, handles, legs, straps and any attached desk or shelving. Ask the installer to identify missing information and confirm whether they can fit and commission this configuration. Use the site measurement guide for the survey and dimensional approvals.

UK product safety guidance states that businesses making, importing, distributing or selling consumer products are responsible for their safety. Treat the installer’s review as part of your evidence, alongside product testing. Ask a competent testing specialist to identify applicable standards and assess the complete wall bed, rather than accepting a report for an ordinary bed frame.

Measure operating forces throughout the movement

Ask for measured opening and closing forces at the intended handle, through the full travel, with the specified mattress and permitted bedding. Record the measurement method, adjustment setting and configuration. Agree acceptable results with the installer and testing specialist before purchase. A video showing easy movement does not establish the force required or whether the bed remains controllable.

Review starting effort, changes in resistance, final closing effort and handle reach. Ask how movement behaves if the user pauses or loses their grip, and how the permitted mattress range affects balance. Have this assessed under a controlled test plan with suitable restraints. Do not ask an installer to release an unsecured bed to demonstrate safety.

Check counterbalance, adjustment and failure behaviour

Identify whether the design uses springs, gas struts or counterweights. Obtain component identities, mounting details, adjustment instructions and replacement specifications. Ask how stored energy is restrained during assembly, adjustment and maintenance. Specify who can perform these tasks and how the moving frame is supported while the mechanism is disconnected.

Ask the factory and testing specialist what happens if a counterbalance component weakens, detaches or fails. Request evidence for the complete assembly, including mechanism attachments and cabinet joints. Agree durability evidence and maintenance checks. Hold the order if controlled movement depends on undocumented adjustment or if the supplier cannot explain the failure behaviour.

Verify locking and map trapping points

Ask how the bed is positively retained when stowed and how the user confirms that the lock has engaged. Check for partial engagement, accidental release and access by children. Review how legs deploy and remain secured in use. Counterbalance assistance alone should not be accepted as evidence that the bed is locked.

Design anchorage for the actual wall

Have the installer identify the supporting material, its condition, lining thickness, cavities, stud positions and concealed services. Ask the factory for attachment loads during opening, closing and use, including pull-out and shear loads. Trace the load path through the brackets, cabinet joints and anchors into the building. The furniture anti-tip fixing guide provides related fixing checks.

Ask a structural engineer or competent fixing designer to resolve uncertain wall capacity or reinforcement. Obtain a written fixing schedule matched to the substrate and bed loads, covering anchor selection, locations, embedment, spacing, edge distances and installation method. Do not accept supplied plugs or a generic plasterboard rating as site approval. Agree any verification testing with the designer before drilling.

Set release and commissioning gates

Before manufacture, approve an identified pack containing the configuration, force-test plan, locking checks, trapping assessment and site fixing design. Map finger, limb and head trapping points around hinges, frame edges, legs, cabinet gaps and nearby furniture throughout movement. Ask how guards or design changes control them. Use the test report verification guide to check that evidence matches the ordered assembly.

Before use, have the installer record the anchors fitted, mechanism settings, lock and leg operation, clearances and controlled movement after installation. Stop commissioning if movement is uncontrolled, locks fail to engage or attachments move. Follow the assembly instructions guide for instruction checks. Hand over operating restrictions, maintenance instructions and signs that mean the bed should be taken out of use.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fit a wall bed to plasterboard?

Have the installer identify the structure behind the lining and obtain a fixing design for the bed loads. Plasterboard appearance or a generic anchor rating cannot establish whether your wall is suitable.

How much force should a wall bed need to open?

Agree acceptance criteria with the installer and testing specialist for the exact mechanism, mattress and users. Request measured forces throughout travel, with the method and adjustment settings recorded.

Do gas struts keep a wall bed safely closed?

Ask for separate evidence of closed-position retention and lock engagement. Review accidental release and how the bed behaves if a strut weakens or fails.

Does a factory test report prove my installation is safe?

Check which assembly, mechanism and anchorage the report tested. Your installer still needs to assess the actual wall, approve the fixing design and commission the installed bed.
