Getting started

Flag and flagpole permissions before ordering

Before ordering, send your council the exact flag artwork, site plan and pole drawings. Check the advertisement consent position for your UK nation, whether installation needs separate approval, and the owner's permission. Coordinate the agreed factory specification with Cambridge China Bridge.

Start with the exact flag design

Prepare artwork showing every crest, word, sponsor logo and decorative addition, including anything printed on the pole. Describe whether this is a national flag, sports club flag, personal design or promotional flag. Send the complete design for assessment before approving printing.

Check permission to reproduce borrowed artwork separately from permission to display the flag. Our crest and character permissions guide covers that rights check. Keep the permission record with the proposed artwork.

Check the advertisement consent position

In England, some flags require formal consent from the local planning authority, while the Union Flag does not. Ask the authority to identify the route for your exact design and display arrangement. For a club flag, highlight sponsorship, promotional wording and any changes to a national design rather than assuming the club's approval settles the planning question.

Provide the flag dimensions, pole height, mounting position and proposed combination of flags. Include existing flags on the building and grounds. Ask the council to record which conditions apply to the proposal and whether you need to apply for advertisement consent.

Use the rules for the site's UK nation

Identify the nation where the flag will fly before using an exemption or ordering a standard installation package. Use the starting points below, then obtain advice on the actual site and artwork.

National starting points for your council enquiry
NationWhat to check
EnglandUse the England flag guidance to assess the design and display arrangement. Ask which conditions apply before relying on a consent exemption.
WalesOfficial guidance describes national flag flying as deregulated. Ask the council to confirm the Welsh position for your exact design, pole and proposed additions.
ScotlandOfficial guidance places flag flying outside advertisement control. Ask separately about the pole, foundations and building attachments.
Northern IrelandAsk the council to assess the applicable advertisement consent route. If express consent is needed, the application must be made in writing to the appropriate council.

Ask separately about installing the pole

In England, displaying an advertisement follows a specific approval process, and separate planning permission is not required in addition to advertisement consent for the display. Ask the council what that covers in your proposal, including the pole and associated works. Do not turn a flag display decision into an assumption about every installation operation.

Send drawings showing foundations, ground level, wall or roof fixings and nearby boundaries. Ask about listed-property restrictions and building control where relevant; our site permissions guide explains those wider checks. Obtain the property owner's written agreement and discuss installation, access and maintenance with the venue. Our club equipment guide covers club and venue approval.

Make the reviewed design the factory specification

As a purchasing precaution, hold production until the council advice, necessary decisions, artwork permissions and owner approval are resolved. Match the reviewed artwork and drawings to the quotation. Record flag material, finished dimensions, attachment details, pole construction and the installation information your local installer requests.

Use our factory artwork approval guide for the printing handover. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can obtain proofs and pole drawings and track agreed changes. Require renewed buyer approval before the factory changes artwork, dimensions or mounting details.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fly a Union Flag at home without consent?

In England, the official flag guide says the Union Flag does not require formal consent. Ask separately about the proposed pole and installation, and check the rules for your UK nation.

Can my club flag include a sponsor logo?

Send the complete sponsored artwork to the council before printing. Ask whether the design and display arrangement qualify for the route you intend to use. Check artwork rights separately.

Does advertisement consent cover installing a flagpole?

Ask the council to confirm what the decision covers, including the pole, foundations and attachments. In England, the advertisement display process does not require additional planning permission for the display itself.

What should I send the council before ordering?

Send the site address, photographs, complete artwork, flag dimensions, pole height, mounting and foundation drawings, and details of other flags. Ask for advice on display consent and installation.
