Faulty goods on hire purchase: who handles it?
For a personal purchase on hire purchase, complain to the finance company supplying the goods under your agreement. Send the agreement and fault evidence, request a remedy and confirm payment arrangements. For business equipment, check the contract before assuming consumer protection applies. Supplier records can be clarified by Cambridge China Bridge.

Identify the agreement and the buyer
Read the signed agreement rather than relying on the retailer's description of monthly payments. Find the finance company's legal name, the named customer, the goods description and the ownership terms. Ask whether the arrangement is hire purchase, conditional sale, a separate loan or buy now pay later. Check who supplies the goods under the agreement and whether there is an option to purchase.
Consumer protection concerns an individual acting wholly or mainly outside their business or profession. For company equipment or a mainly business purchase, obtain advice on the actual agreement rather than assuming consumer remedies apply. Our business supply terms guide helps with contract checks. If the arrangement is buy now pay later, use our instalment dispute guide.
Put the faulty-goods complaint to the lender
Under hire purchase involving a finance company that owns and supplies the goods, that company is the supplier to address about their condition. Consumer hire-purchase contracts carry implied goods rights, including satisfactory quality. Direct the complaint to the finance company named in your agreement, even if the retailer offers to organise the inspection or repair.
Tell the retailer too, but ask the lender to confirm who will assess the fault, authorise work and communicate the outcome. If it refers you to the Chinese factory, ask it to explain its own position under the supply agreement in writing. Keep factory troubleshooting messages as evidence alongside the lender's response.
Build evidence around the item and its history
Send the agreement, order confirmation, product description and delivery record. Identify the model and serial number, describe the fault and explain when it first appeared. Add photographs or a safe demonstration, installation records, maintenance history and previous repair reports. Separate what you observed from what a technician or factory has suggested.
Keep a dated sequence of reports, inspections, repair attempts and periods when the item could not be used. Before commissioning an independent report, ask what questions need answering and who will pay. Before altering or dismantling the item, use our guide to arranging your own repair. Stop using equipment that appears unsafe.
Request a remedy and written account instructions
State the outcome you want, such as an assessment, repair, replacement or rejection with a refund, and ask the lender to explain which remedy applies to your circumstances. Ask who will arrange collection, approve any repair estimate and cover agreed transport or inspection costs. Do not send the item to China without written return instructions.
Request written instructions about the next payment while the fault is investigated. Ask whether collections will pause and how charges and credit reporting will be handled; do not assume the complaint changes your payment schedule. For any settlement, request an account breakdown showing the deposit, payments received, refund, remaining balance and whether the agreement will close.

Escalate a complaint that remains unresolved
Use the lender's formal complaints procedure. Include the agreement reference, fault history, supporting documents, earlier correspondence and the outcome requested. For an eligible financial-service complaint, you can usually approach the Financial Ombudsman Service if unhappy with the response. If no response arrives, ask that service to confirm when you can refer the complaint. Ask about eligibility and check the referral deadline in the final response.
For escalation, keep the original complaint, proof it was sent, the lender's final response and a clear explanation of what remains unresolved. Ask the complaints service to confirm eligibility for a business agreement before relying on that route. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can help clarify supplier-side records; obtain remedy and account decisions from the finance company.
Frequently asked questions
Who handles faulty goods bought on hire purchase?
Complain to the finance company that supplies the goods under your hire-purchase agreement. Send the agreement and fault evidence, and ask it to explain the remedy and assessment arrangements.
Is paying monthly the same as hire purchase?
Check the signed agreement. Ask the provider to identify the finance type, who supplies and owns the goods, and the purchase option. Monthly payments alone do not identify the arrangement.
Can I stop hire-purchase payments over a fault?
Ask the lender for written payment instructions and any agreed pause. Do not assume reporting a fault changes the collection schedule. Raise affordability problems separately.
Can I take a hire-purchase complaint to the ombudsman?
For an eligible complaint, usually after an unsatisfactory response. If no response arrives, ask the Financial Ombudsman Service to confirm when you can refer it. Complain to the lender first, check eligibility and follow the referral deadline in its final response.
