Getting started

Can I use China-bought equipment in UK competitions?

It may be accepted, but obtain a written decision from the organiser’s nominated technical official for the exact model, configuration, event and class before ordering. Confirm any conditions and final checks, then agree with the seller what happens if eligibility changes before delivery. Coordinate the factory evidence with Cambridge China Bridge.

Identify the event, class and decision-maker

Name the intended competition, event date and class before asking whether equipment is eligible. Ask the organiser for the current rulebook, class specification, amendments and event-specific instructions. Save dated copies and ask which documents take precedence if they conflict. A supplier’s claim that equipment is competition-ready is a reason to request evidence, not a purchasing decision.

Ask the organiser who can give a technical eligibility decision and whether that decision remains subject to examination at the event. Send questions to that nominated person and retain the reply. For shared ownership, spending authority, venue permission and insurance, use our club equipment guide.

Obtain a decision on the exact configuration

Submit the manufacturer, full model designation, revision, photographs, drawings and relevant specifications. Identify fitted components, accessories, firmware and proposed modifications where relevant. Ask whether an approved-equipment list applies, whether the exact variant appears on it, and how an unlisted model can be considered. Do not rely on approval for a similar-looking product.

Request a reply identifying the submitted configuration, event, class, rulebook edition, conditions and unresolved checks. Ask explicitly whether the reply supports purchasing or confirms final eligibility, and whether physical inspection is still needed. Attach the submitted evidence and reply to the order using our product specification guide.

Check modifications before approving production

Ask the technical official which characteristics need checking for your class, such as dimensions, weight, materials, motor, battery, controller or software settings. Request the measurement method and any supporting evidence they expect. Describe proposed upgrades and factory alternatives separately, including changes advertised as improving performance.

Record the accepted components and settings, and instruct the factory to seek written buyer approval before substitutions. Refer eligibility-sensitive changes back to the technical official before accepting them. Keep a revision history linking the decision to the goods. For miniature steam equipment, follow the separate boiler acceptance guide for inspector involvement and construction evidence.

Agree what happens if eligibility changes

Before paying, ask the seller to agree separate responses for goods that differ from the accepted specification and goods that match it but become ineligible after a rule change. Record the intended event, class and rulebook version, who monitors updates, when they must notify the buyer, and when production or dispatch should pause pending instructions.

Negotiate the available options: an approved modification, replacement, cancellation or proceeding for another agreed use. State who pays for redesign, testing, storage, return transport and work already completed. Agree the refund basis, payment timing and a deadline for choosing an option, including changes during transit. Put these terms in the order; use our business supply terms guide to review the wider agreement.

Recheck before dispatch and retain the evidence

Before releasing the balance or authorising dispatch, have the named buyer check for rule updates and ask whether the earlier decision still applies. Compare the actual goods with the submitted configuration and resolve discrepancies before shipment. Carry the decision, specifications and inspection records to the event. Cambridge China Bridge’s staff in China can coordinate factory evidence and checks against the agreed specification.

For Great Britain, conformity marking is only necessary where sector-specific regulations require it; not every product needs a conformity mark. Keep CE and UKCA document checks separate from the organiser’s eligibility decision. Ask what final checks remain before competition use, and leave time to resolve them before relying on the equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Will a Chinese supplier’s competition certificate be enough?

Send it to the organiser’s nominated technical official with the exact model and configuration. Ask what it establishes and what further evidence or examination is needed before ordering.

Can I enter with a model that is not on the approved list?

Ask whether a list applies to your event and class, and whether unlisted models can be assessed. Obtain the decision and any conditions before committing to the purchase.

Can I modify the equipment after approval?

Submit the proposed change before making it. Ask whether the earlier decision still applies and whether fresh evidence or examination is needed. Keep the accepted configuration with the order records.

What if competition rules change before delivery?

Agree the response with the seller before paying: notification, production or dispatch holds, modification, replacement or cancellation, costs and refund terms. Include changes while the goods are in transit.
