Buying modular staging from China for a club

Before ordering, obtain load limits and supporting evidence for the exact stage configuration, then have a competent specialist review stability, connections, access and edge protection. Agree assembly, inspection and written acceptance with your intended UK venue. Factory checks can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Agree what the venue will accept before ordering

Send the venue a proposed layout showing stage height, deck arrangement, performers, equipment, stairs, ramps and exposed edges. Describe whether people will dance, jump or move heavy equipment. Ask who will review the structural evidence and accept the installed stage. Use our club equipment guide for purchase authority and insurance checks.

Obtain written acceptance of the proposal and document requirements before paying a deposit, with unresolved conditions listed. HSE guidance says to produce a final site plan once requirements are finalised. Include the accepted staging layout in that plan, and agree that later changes return to the venue and structural reviewer.

Get documented loads for the exact configuration

Request drawings, calculations and relevant test reports identifying the deck, frame, legs, braces, connectors and permitted heights. Ask the supplier to distinguish evenly distributed loads from concentrated loads, and to state the units, load positions and support assumptions. A catalogue capacity without those details leaves the intended use unproven.

Give a competent structural reviewer the proposed performers, instruments, equipment wheels and movement patterns. Ask whether the evidence covers concentrated, moving and sideways loads, and what restrictions should appear in the operating instructions. Use our test report verification guide to check that reports match the supplied construction. Do not establish capacity by asking members to jump on a sample.

Check stability and the supporting floor

Have the reviewer specify leg adjustment limits, bracing, baseplates and any anchoring or ballast for each intended arrangement. Ask for support reactions so the venue can assess loads beneath individual feet, rather than only the total stage weight. Ask the venue and a competent structural reviewer to confirm that the supporting floor or ground has adequate load-bearing capacity.

Agree how installers will deal with slopes, uneven surfaces, soft ground and floor protection. Avoid improvised packing or unapproved leg extensions. For outdoor use, obtain weather limits and a monitoring and closure plan. Tell the reviewer about skirts, scenery and other attachments that could catch wind; do not add them after the stability review.

Inspect deck connections as part of the system

Ask for drawings showing how adjacent decks connect, how legs lock into frames and how braces and accessories attach. Require identifiable connector parts and instructions showing how to confirm engagement. Ask the reviewer to address separation, uplift, sideways movement and uneven deck edges, including at corners and changes of level.

Arrange a factory trial assembly of the ordered layout, including stairs and edge protection. Check fit, gaps, rocking, missing locks and whether installers can inspect connections beneath the decks. Use our assembly instructions guide to assess the instructions. Specify approved replacement parts and require review before mixing components from different systems.

Specify access and edge protection with the stage

Have the venue and a competent adviser review stairs, landings, handrails, ramps and edge protection for the intended users and activities. Include people with reduced mobility, performers carrying equipment and movement in low light. Ask for drawings and load evidence covering the protection and its attachment to the stage, rather than accepting decorative rails.

Agree how performance edges, access openings and changes of level will be managed. Check slip resistance, trip hazards at joints, cable routes and whether loose equipment could fall onto people below. Ask the venue to review emergency movement and access arrangements. Include the agreed accessories in the purchase specification and trial assembly.

Separate factory checks from permission to use

HSE guidance says employers and those controlling work at height must ensure it is properly planned, supervised and carried out by competent people. For this purchase, appoint an assembly supervisor familiar with the system and agree a safe assembly and dismantling method. Keep people away from incomplete staging and plan how installers will avoid falls while fitting protection.

Agree an inspection and handover record covering the installed layout, supports, braces, locks, access, protection and operating limits before use. Name who accepts the stage for the venue and who can stop use. Agree further checks after relocation, alteration, damage or adverse weather. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can coordinate documents and factory checks; obtain venue acceptance of the installed arrangement separately.

Frequently asked questions

What load rating do we need for a club stage?

Have a competent structural reviewer assess your performers, equipment and movement. Obtain documented limits for the exact layout, height and supports, including concentrated and moving loads.

Can we connect new stage decks to our existing staging?

Ask the designer to review compatibility, connectors and the combined arrangement in writing. Similar dimensions or a successful trial fit do not establish structural compatibility.

Does a low stage need edge protection?

Have a competent adviser assess falls, users and activities with the venue. Agree the protection and management of performance edges before buying; do not decide from height alone.

Will a factory certificate make our venue accept the stage?

Obtain the venue's written document requirements before ordering. Agree who reviews the design and who accepts the installed stage, including its supports, connections, access and protection.
