Can China shipping pallets go in UK racking?
Only if the pallet suits the warehouse's racking, the actual load and its handling equipment. An ISPM 15 mark does not establish that suitability. Get the warehouse's written acceptance of the pallet specification before dispatch. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate these checks with the factory.

Separate import treatment from racking suitability
A pallet that carries goods through transport is not automatically suitable for storage across rack beams. HSE's pallet-safety guidance advises against storing loaded pallets in racking unless their design and construction suit that racking. The treatment mark addresses a different question. Our wooden pallets and crates guide covers timber, treatment and sourcing checks.
Ask your third-party logistics warehouse for its pallet acceptance specification before the factory orders packaging. Request confirmation for the proposed pallet, loaded goods and storage method together. A booking acceptance or a photograph of a treatment mark is not enough to resolve the engineering question.
Match the construction to the beam support
Send the warehouse a dimensioned drawing showing the top deck, bottom boards, bearers or blocks, fasteners and permitted entry directions. Include underside photographs of the proposed production pallet. Ask the warehouse to identify which members will bear on its beams or rails, the unsupported span and the placement tolerances it accepts.
Confirm the storage orientation and whether support bars or decking are present. For drive-in storage, ask specifically about rail contact and an off-centre pallet position. Do not assume an overall footprint proves adequate support. If the arrangement is uncertain, ask the pallet manufacturer and warehouse's racking specialist to resolve it before shipment.
Approve the actual load, not a generic capacity
Give the pallet manufacturer the packed weight, carton or drum arrangement, contact points, overhang and intended storage conditions. Ask for capacity evidence for that load arrangement on the warehouse's proposed supports. Treat floor-supported, stacked and rack-supported capacities as separate questions; do not accept an unexplained capacity label.
Pay particular attention to machinery feet, drums and other concentrated loads. Ask whether a load-spreading base is needed and have its design checked with the pallet. Agree the packing pattern and restraint method, then record them in the factory packing instructions. Use preparing pallets for retailer or fulfilment delivery for the receiving site's wider delivery brief. For retailer pallet schemes, see our guide to managing returnable pallets.
Check the whole equipment route
Ask the warehouse to check fork entry height, fork spacing and length, and clearance for pallet-truck wheels against the proposed underside. Include conveyors, reach trucks and automated handling where used. Ask which pallet members each machine supports or lifts, rather than relying on the description 'forklift compatible'.
Arrange a representative loaded-pallet trial under the warehouse's supervision where compatibility remains uncertain. Record the pallet version, packing pattern, equipment and support arrangement used. Agree how observations of catching, board damage, bending or load movement will be assessed. Our warehouse preparation guide helps coordinate arrival arrangements.

Set a release and arrival decision
Before dispatch, collect the warehouse's written acceptance, approved drawing, load evidence and photographs showing the production construction and packed load. Ask inspection staff to compare the pallets with that agreed specification. Keep the racking acceptance decision separate from approval of the goods themselves, and stop substitutions pending review.
Agree an arrival check for splits, loose boards, damaged blocks, projecting fasteners and distortion. Arrange a hold area for questionable pallets and decide who can authorise transfer onto warehouse-approved pallets. Agree responsibility for transfer work and damaged goods before dispatch. Do not let an unresolved pallet enter racking simply because the delivery has arrived.
Frequently asked questions
Does an ISPM 15 mark mean a pallet is rackable?
No. The treatment mark does not establish structural suitability. Check the pallet construction, rack supports, actual load and handling equipment with the receiving warehouse.
Is the right pallet size enough for UK racking?
No. Ask which pallet members contact the beams or rails, how the pallet is oriented and what support remains if it is placed off-centre.
Can I use the factory's pallet load rating?
Ask what loading and support conditions the rating covers. Obtain evidence for your packed goods on the warehouse's proposed rack supports before relying on it.
What if my warehouse rejects the shipping pallets?
Keep them out of racking pending assessment. Agree a supervised transfer onto accepted pallets, including responsibility for labour, handling damage and stock identification.
