Getting started

Will a safe from China meet UK insurance requirements?

A safe bought from China may be acceptable, but confirm the exact model’s certification independently and obtain your insurer’s written agreement to the installation and valuables cover before ordering. Check burglary and fire protection separately. Factory evidence can be gathered by Cambridge China Bridge.

Start with the valuables you want covered

Send your insurer a proposed contents list, distinguishing cash, jewellery, watches, documents and business-owned items. Ask which security certification, resistance grade and installation conditions they would accept for those contents at your address. Treat a supplier’s advertised cash rating as a question for the insurer, rather than an agreed insured amount.

Request an answer covering theft of the contents, removal of the whole safe and fire damage. Ask when valuables must be locked inside and whether key storage or access arrangements affect acceptance. Use our home insurance guide for valuation, specified-item limits and ownership questions; this guide adds the safe-specific checks.

Verify the certificate against the exact safe

Request the complete product certificate, attachments and clear photographs of the certification plate on the proposed safe. Record the certificate holder, factory, model, size, lock configuration, certificate reference, standard and resistance grade. Ask the issuer to confirm whether the ordered configuration is covered, including any different brand name or electronic lock.

Find the certification body’s register and contact details independently. Compare its entry with the supplier’s documents and ask about current status, model differences and production-date restrictions. GOV.UK recommends accreditation as a means of demonstrating an organisation’s competence. If accreditation is claimed, check its scope with the accreditor. Our supplier certificates guide explains the different document types.

Check burglary and fire protection separately

For burglary protection, ask for evidence covering the safe body, door and fitted locking arrangement. Do not accept certification of the lock alone as evidence for the complete safe. Ask the issuer to resolve any mismatch between the certificate, plate and quotation before treating the security claim as verified.

For fire protection, request separate evidence identifying the tested model, exposure duration and contents category. Ask whether it covers paper documents or the particular electronic media you intend to store. Do not infer burglary protection from a fire claim, or fire protection from a burglary grade. Use our test report verification guide to check sample identity and exclusions.

Agree anchoring before choosing the location

Have a UK safe installer review the manufacturer’s anchoring instructions, safe weight, fixing positions and proposed floor or wall. Ask them to assess the supporting structure, suitable anchors, access route and concealed services. Send the resulting installation plan to your insurer and resolve any difference between its conditions and the manufacturer’s instructions before ordering.

Agree who supplies the anchors, carries out installation and records completion. Ask the insurer what installation evidence it wants, such as an invoice, photographs or installer confirmation. Do not approve extra holes, replacement locks or other alterations without checking their effect on certification with the issuer and acceptance with the insurer.

Make written acceptance part of the order

Ask the insurer to confirm acceptance of the attached safe model, certificate, locking arrangement, installation plan and contents list. Request the accepted cash and valuables amounts, storage conditions, exclusions and cover start point in writing. Resolve any conflict with the policy schedule or wording before committing to the purchase.

Attach the accepted configuration to your supplier order and require approval before substitutions. Arrange pre-shipment inspection to compare the actual safe, plate, serial number, lock and anchoring kit with that specification. Cambridge China Bridge’s own staff in China can coordinate factory documents and physical checks; the certificate issuer verifies scope, the UK installer assesses installation and your insurer confirms cover.

Frequently asked questions

Will my UK insurer accept a safe bought from China?

Ask before ordering. Submit the exact model, independently checked certificate, installation plan and contents list. Obtain written acceptance and any revised policy documents.

Does a fireproof safe protect against burglary?

Do not infer burglary protection from a fire claim. Request separate evidence for each risk and check that it covers the exact safe and fitted lock.

How do I check whether a safe certificate is genuine?

Use independently found issuer contact details or its register. Match the certificate reference, holder, model, grade and lock configuration, then ask about status and unexplained differences.

Does a safe’s cash rating guarantee insurance cover?

Treat an advertised rating as a proposal for your insurer to assess. Obtain written confirmation of the accepted cash and valuables amounts, installation conditions and storage requirements.
