Can I get a China bike through Cycle to Work?
It may be possible, subject to your employer's scheme accepting the supplier and purchase route. Confirm approval, the contracting buyer, ownership and servicing before paying. Do not assume a bicycle you buy yourself can be reimbursed through the scheme. Discuss the sourcing brief with Cambridge China Bridge.

Get the supplier and purchase route accepted
Send your employer or scheme provider the proposed seller's identity, bicycle specification and quotation before paying a deposit. Ask whether it accepts that seller, can onboard a new supplier, or needs the bicycle supplied through an existing participating retailer. Obtain written acceptance for the actual transaction; a factory's willingness to sell does not confirm scheme acceptance.
The government describes the tax treatment for employer loans or hires where bicycles are available to all employees and mainly used for getting to work. Ask your employer to confirm your eligibility and intended use. For an assisted bicycle, review our UK e-bike road-use checks alongside scheme acceptance.
Confirm who contracts, orders and pays
Government guidance describes a typical hire between the employee and an employer that has bought or leased the equipment; a provider can also hire directly to the employee. Ask who places the supplier order, whose name appears as buyer, who pays and who signs your hire agreement. Choosing the bicycle does not settle these roles.
For a China shipment, agree who arranges import clearance, delivery, assembly and acceptance, and which charges the approved quotation covers. Ask whether any voucher can actually be redeemed with the proposed seller before requesting it. Use our purchase order and invoice guide to keep the agreed buyer, goods and payment documents consistent.
Separate hire payments from ownership
Do not treat completion of salary deductions as proof that you own the bicycle. HMRC says the loan or hire exemption requires no ownership transfer, and an automatic transfer built into the agreement from the outset prevents the exemption applying.
Ask who owns the bicycle during hire and what happens when deductions end. Request the terms for continued hire, return and any separately agreed later sale, including charges and payroll treatment. Also ask what happens if you leave employment, the bicycle is stolen or it becomes unusable. Have payroll explain the tax treatment of any proposed ownership transfer.
Arrange servicing before approving the order
Government guidance places appropriate care, maintenance and security with the employee while the employer or provider owns the bicycle during hire. Ask whether your agreement includes servicing, who pays for repairs and who authorises work on the owner's bicycle.
Before ordering, ask a local mechanic whether they will assemble and service the exact model. Confirm access to replacement parts, warranty contacts, repair approval and responsibility for return transport. Use our checks before the first ride for the assembly inspection rather than assuming scheme acceptance establishes riding safety.

Keep a personal purchase separate
The published exemption concerns employer lending or hiring. A bicycle you buy and own personally is not itself that arrangement. Do not assume an invoice in your name can later be converted into a scheme purchase or reimbursed tax-free. If you have already paid, give payroll the invoice, payment record and any prior authorisation before agreeing further steps.
Before making any payment yourself, ask whether you are purchasing personally or acting under an expressly approved employer purchasing process. Obtain written instructions identifying the buyer and payment route. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can help collect the supplier quotation, model details and servicing information for review by your employer or provider.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use any Chinese bicycle supplier for Cycle to Work?
Ask your employer or provider to accept the named seller and transaction before paying. Confirm whether direct supply is accepted or a participating retailer is needed.
Can I buy a bike myself and claim Cycle to Work later?
Do not assume so. The exemption concerns employer lending or hiring. Show payroll your invoice, payment record and any prior authorisation before expecting reimbursement or scheme treatment.
Do I own my bike when salary deductions stop?
Do not assume ownership transfers. Check the hire agreement and ask the owner about continued hire, return or a separately agreed later sale, including its tax treatment.
Who services a China-sourced Cycle to Work bike?
Government guidance assigns appropriate care and maintenance to the employee during hire. Check what servicing your agreement includes and find a mechanic willing to support the exact model before ordering.
