Getting started

How to check a portable EV charging lead

Match the lead to the vehicle, charging connection and intended supply. Obtain the exact model's instructions and protection test evidence, then have an electrician assess the socket and circuit. Resolve any adaptor or extension restrictions before ordering. Factory checks can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Define the complete charging arrangement

Establish whether you need a portable mains charging unit with a control box, a detachable cable for a socketed chargepoint, or a replacement tethered cable. Send the supplier the vehicle model, production year, market version and photographs of the vehicle inlet and intended supply connection.

Ask for written confirmation of connector compatibility, voltage, phase arrangement, current rating and charging control compatibility. For a replacement tethered cable, obtain the chargepoint manufacturer's acceptance of the replacement and fitting method. Treat a matching connector shape as a starting check, not permission to connect.

Ask what the electrical protection actually does

Request a protection schedule covering earth continuity, missing-earth response, residual-current protection for alternating and direct current, overheating and current limitation. Ask which functions are inside the portable unit and which depend on the installation. Have a competent laboratory assess the complete assembly and explain any claimed protection against a broken supply earth or neutral.

An OPSS safety report identified a charging cable with unsuitable earthing and a high electric-shock risk. A separate recall identified residual-current test failures and a charging control signal exceeding the mains plug's current capacity. Ask for results for your exact plug, cable and controller combination. Our test report verification guide explains how to match the evidence.

Check the intended socket and circuit

Have an electrician assess the actual socket, circuit, earthing, protective devices and other connected loads against the charging unit's instructions and intended charging duration. Ask whether the selected current is suitable and whether the unit retains a safe setting after power loss. HSE advises checking supply voltage and available current against the equipment.

Check socket condition, plug fit, support for the control box and exposure to rain. Ask whether weather protection remains effective while connected. Arrange a supervised charging trial after the safety review, with agreed stop conditions for heat, damage or repeated tripping. Use our appliance plug guide for plug approval and fuse checks.

Resolve adaptor and extension restrictions

Read the vehicle, portable charger and chargepoint instructions for the exact models. Look specifically for restrictions on travel adaptors, conversion plugs, extension leads, cable reels and extensions between the charging connector and vehicle. If an instruction prohibits the proposed arrangement, change the arrangement before buying.

Ask the relevant manufacturer to identify any permitted accessory by exact model and confirm its operating limits in writing. A supplier's description such as 'heavy duty' or 'outdoor' does not resolve a manufacturer restriction. If the lead cannot reach directly, consider a suitable longer approved assembly or a professionally assessed charging location.

Make the evidence a purchase condition

Put the agreed configuration, component identities, English instructions, protection evidence and inspection criteria into the order. Inspect connector locking, cable entries, strain relief, markings and batch identity. Arrange electrical and functional checks by competent people; keep fault testing out of an ordinary buyer demonstration. For conductor and assembly checks, see our cable sourcing guide.

Hold release if compatibility, socket acceptance, protection evidence or accessory permissions remain unresolved. Keep the approved sample and prevent component substitutions without review. Cambridge China Bridge can use its own staff in China to compare production goods and documents against this brief, while the intended supply needs assessment where it will be used.

Frequently asked questions

Will a China-bought charging lead fit my car?

Ask for confirmation against the vehicle model, production year, market version and inlet. Check electrical ratings and charging control compatibility as well as connector fit.

Can I use an ordinary household socket?

Have an electrician assess the actual socket and circuit against the charging unit's instructions and intended use. A plug fitting the socket does not establish suitability for charging.

Can I use an extension lead or travel adaptor?

Check the exact vehicle and charging equipment instructions. If they prohibit the arrangement, change it. Ask the manufacturer to identify any permitted accessory and its limits in writing.

Is a video of the cable charging enough?

It demonstrates operation in the filmed arrangement. Ask separately for protection test evidence matching the supplied assembly, production inspection results and assessment of your intended supply.
