Is a Chinese shopping website a cloned store?

Leave the advert and find the seller through an independent route. Match the exact domain to the real business, verify its registered identity and confirm who will receive payment. Stop if any link remains unexplained. Cambridge China Bridge can check Chinese suppliers with its own staff in China.

Leave the advert and find the real shop

Save the advert, advertiser profile and landing address without entering personal details. Open a separate browser window and find the claimed brand or seller independently. Prefer an established contact or previously verified address. Search results and sponsored listings also need checking. Ask the business reached independently whether it operates the exact shopping domain shown in the advert.

Compare the shop reached independently with the advertised shop: contact details, product descriptions, returns address and company name. Search distinctive wording and reverse-search product images to find possible originals. Matching photographs, logos or live chat do not establish ownership. If the genuine business denies operating the advertised domain, stop.

Check the actual domain, not the logo

Open the full address in the browser address bar, outside the social app if necessary. Identify the hostname before the path. Compare spelling, hyphens and the domain ending with the independently confirmed address. A brand name in the path or a subdomain does not establish who controls the underlying domain. Record the final address after redirects.

Use a domain-registration lookup appropriate to the domain ending. Compare available registration dates and organisation details with the shop's claimed history. Recent registration or hidden details warrant further checks but do not prove fraud; an old domain is no guarantee either. A padlock means an encrypted connection, not a verified seller. Stop if the browser warns that the connection is unsafe.

Connect the storefront to a real seller

Ask for the seller's registered Chinese company name, business licence, registered address and unified social credit code. Follow our supplier verification guide for the underlying company checks. A copied licence can belong to a real company that has nothing to do with the shop.

Contact that company through details established independently of the suspect storefront. Ask it to confirm the exact domain, your sales contact and the proposed order. Reconcile its response with the seller named in the shop's terms and quotation. If a trading company operates the shop for a factory, ask both parties to explain the relationship. Registration alone does not authenticate a website.

Verify who will receive the payment

Before typing card details, inspect the checkout address and any payment-provider redirect. Open the claimed provider independently to check its genuine domain. Ask the verified seller for the merchant name, expected statement description and any collecting intermediary. A provider logo or familiar-looking payment form is not confirmation. See our supplier payment-link checks.

Match the proposed recipient to the verified seller and order. A payment processor can legitimately have a different name, but establish its role independently rather than accepting the storefront's explanation alone. If checkout hides the merchant identity, pause. If asked to switch to a personal account or changed bank details, use our payment-redirection guide. Do not make a test payment to settle an unresolved identity.

Set a stop point and keep the evidence

Proceed only when you can connect the confirmed domain, verified seller and explained payment recipient. Keep screenshots of the advert, full addresses, seller details, quotation and independent confirmations. Unresolved contradictions, refusal to identify the merchant or pressure to pay are reasons to hold the order. These checks reduce uncertainty; they cannot guarantee delivery or product quality.

Report a suspected cloned website through the National Cyber Security Centre's suspicious-website reporting route, and a scam advert to the Advertising Standards Authority. If you have already entered card details, contact your card issuer immediately through its app or the details on your card, even if checkout appeared to fail. For a business purchase, Cambridge China Bridge can review the supplier evidence through our quote-check service.

Frequently asked questions

Does a padlock mean a Chinese shopping site is safe?

It indicates an encrypted connection, not an honest seller. Independently confirm the domain, the company operating it and the payment recipient before entering card details.

Can a fake shop use a real company's business licence?

Yes. Check the company separately, then contact it through independently established details to confirm that it operates the exact domain. A licence image alone does not connect the company to the shop.

Is a different name at checkout a scam?

It may be a payment processor or trading company. Ask the verified seller to explain the relationship and confirm it independently. Pause if the recipient cannot be identified or the explanation conflicts with the order.

What if I entered my card details but payment failed?

Contact your card issuer immediately using its app or the details on your card. Explain that you entered details on a suspected cloned shop. Save the address and screenshots; do not retry the payment.
