How to check AliExpress, Temu and Taobao reviews
Use reviews as buying clues: match them to your exact variant, look for specific use and fault details, check incentives and seek independent confirmation. Pause if important claims remain unsupported, especially before buying stock for resale. Discuss supplier and product checks with Cambridge China Bridge.

Match each review to the variant you will buy
On AliExpress, Temu or Taobao, check whether the review panel combines different colours, sizes, materials, models or bundles. Use variant filters where available, then compare each review's option label and photographs with your selection. If the variant is unclear, treat the review as weak evidence for your intended purchase. A comment about an accessory tells you little about the main product.
Save the listing and selected option together. Look for reviews discussing the features that matter to your business, such as fit, finish, assembly or repeated use. Separate delivery praise from product performance. Older reviews showing different construction may concern an earlier version; ask the seller to explain the difference before relying on them.
Look for patterns, without assuming fraud
Compare recent reviews with older ones and read critical comments as well as praise. Investigate clusters of similar wording posted close together, repeated photographs, irrelevant descriptions or abrupt changes in what reviewers describe. Where reviewer histories are visible, look for repeated generic praise across unrelated products. These are reasons to investigate, not proof that a review is fake.
Prefer comments that identify the variant, describe actual use and explain a fault or limitation. Short praise, awkward translation and a purchase badge cannot establish authenticity by themselves. Repeated complaints about the same loose fitting or missing component are useful questions for the seller, even when the overall rating looks reassuring.
Check what the reviewer received in return
Look for clear statements that the reviewer received a free sample, discount, refund or another benefit for posting. Distinguish a disclosed incentive from evidence of independent purchasing. Disclosure helps you understand the context; it does not establish that the product performs as claimed. Check whether the reviewer used the exact variant and explains drawbacks as well as benefits.
A request to post praise before receiving a benefit, or to change criticism to obtain a refund, gives you reason to question the review's independence. Save the message and any incentive wording. Do not accept the seller's chosen screenshots as your only evidence. If a refund depends on changing feedback, read our review-change and refund guide.
Corroborate the claims before buying stock
Search for the exact model and visible product features outside the listing. Compare independent discussions, demonstrations and photographs that show real use. Check whether the author identifies sponsorship or sales commission. Reposted seller images and repeated claims across shops are not independent confirmation. Similar-looking products may come from different factories or use different materials.
Turn recurring praise and complaints into a sample-check brief. Test the claimed function in your intended working conditions and record what passes or fails. Use our sample comparison guide for the trial and our supplier verification guide for the company checks. Reviews cannot replace safety evidence or demonstrate that a future bulk batch will match a sample.

Report misleading reviews with usable evidence
Save the listing address, shop name, review text, reviewer name, date, variant label and screenshots showing the context. Include duplicate examples or incentive messages and explain the specific mismatch. Use the platform's review-reporting control where available, or ask customer support how to submit the evidence. Describe what you observed rather than accusing someone of fraud without proof.
For concerns affecting UK consumers, use the Competition and Markets Authority's reporting guidance on GOV.UK to report a consumer or market problem. The authority cannot step in or advise on individual complaints. Keep any order dispute or refund request separate from the review report, and retain the platform's response. Before buying business stock, record whether the evidence supports purchase, a sample trial or a pause.
Frequently asked questions
Do AliExpress reviews cover every variant?
Do not assume so. Check the option label, photographs and available filters. If a review concerns another model or bundle, it may tell you little about your selection.
How can I spot suspicious Temu reviews?
Compare wording, dates, photographs and product details across reviews. Clusters of generic praise or repeated images deserve checking, but no isolated pattern proves a review is fake.
Are reviews for free samples useful?
They can provide useful observations when the incentive and exact product are clear. Check actual use, limitations and independent corroboration before relying on the recommendation.
How do I report a misleading Taobao review?
Save the review, listing, variant and supporting messages. Use the reporting control if available, or ask support for the reporting route. Explain the mismatch and keep your order dispute separate.
