Getting started

Can I cancel without cancellation information?

Yes, potentially. If your personal purchase carries UK cancellation rights and the seller omitted the required cancellation information, the deadline can extend to 12 months after the normal deadline. Check the original records and send clear notice promptly. For help assembling sourcing records, contact Cambridge China Bridge.

Confirm that this is a covered personal purchase

This guide concerns a personal goods purchase from a UK seller, including goods sourced from China. If you are buying stock for your business, ask an adviser which rules apply. First use our personal cancellation guide to check the seller, ordering method and any possible exception. Before relying on missing information to extend the deadline, ask a consumer adviser to confirm that cancellation rights apply to your purchase.

Put the accepted quote, order confirmation and invoice together. Identify the company selling the goods and distinguish any separate sourcing service. Keep this check focused on your contract with the UK seller, while using factory correspondence to reconstruct what happened.

Audit what you actually received

Check whether the cancellation information explains the conditions, time limit and procedure, and whether a model cancellation form was supplied. Ask a consumer adviser to confirm what information and confirmation your seller was required to provide and when. Check pre-order messages, checkout wording you saved, attachments, order confirmation and parcel paperwork. Government guidance says the information must be easy to understand and provided on paper, by email or in another format the customer can save for future reference.

Make a record for each document: sender, date received, attachment name, exact cancellation wording and anything missing. Search archived messages and spam folders. Ask the seller for the version it says it supplied, when and how it supplied it, and its supporting record. Save today's website separately; it does not show what you received originally. Distinguish 'not found in my records' from a confirmed omission.

Calculate the extension from the correct dates

If the required cancellation-right information was omitted, the cancellation period may be extended. Ask a consumer adviser to confirm the ordinary deadline and how the extension applies to your purchase. Use our cancellation-period guide to help identify separate deliveries and the relevant receipt event. Record customer receipt rather than factory dispatch.

Government guidance says that if the seller supplies the missing cancellation information during the 12 months it describes, you have 14 days to cancel from when you are told. Ask a consumer adviser to confirm how that window applies to your dates. Keep any corrective message and its receipt date. Ask the seller to show its calculation if it says you are late, and seek consumer advice where the information or dates remain disputed.

Give clear notice and preserve the sending record

Send a clear statement of your decision to cancel, using the model form if available. Ask a consumer adviser to confirm the notice requirements and how the deadline is assessed. Send notice promptly while you investigate the missing information, and keep evidence of when and how you sent it. Our broken returns portal guide covers obstructed online forms.

Write: “I am cancelling my personal purchase of [item], order reference [reference]. I have not found the required cancellation information in the communications supplied to me and rely on the extended cancellation period. Please acknowledge this notice and provide return arrangements.” Adapt this to the facts. Keep the complete message, recipient, sending date and time, and any acknowledgement. Retain a copy and proof of posting for letters; use another published contact route promptly if an email bounces.

Keep the return and any dispute moving

Treat notice and return as separate steps. Ask a consumer adviser to confirm any return deadline and whether the seller should collect the goods. Ask promptly for the return destination and postage responsibility. Use our personal return shipping guide before booking an overseas return; do not assume the factory is the correct recipient.

If the seller refuses, ask whether it disputes eligibility, the missing information or your dates. Keep its response beside your document record and notice evidence, then seek consumer advice with that file. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can help retrieve factory records where involved; keep the UK seller's communications and your cancellation notice together.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cancel after the normal cancellation deadline?

Potentially. Where cancellation rights apply and the required information was omitted, the period can extend to 12 months after the normal deadline. Correctly supplied late information can change the deadline.

What if the seller says its website explained cancellation?

Ask for the wording and version it relies on, when and how it supplied it, and supporting records. Compare those with your saved checkout pages, emails and attachments.

Should I wait for the seller to confirm the extension?

Send a clear cancellation notice promptly and keep proof while checking the dates. Ask for the seller's calculation separately rather than leaving your decision unclear.

Does missing information let me cancel personalised goods?

Ask a consumer adviser to confirm whether cancellation rights apply to your goods and whether any exception affects your ability to rely on an extended period.
