Can I cancel if the returns portal is broken?
Yes, if UK consumer cancellation rules cover your purchase and you act in time. You can give clear notice without using the seller's portal or waiting for authorisation. Keep dated proof and arrange the return separately. For help checking the seller and factory return details, contact Cambridge China Bridge.

Check that your purchase has a cancellation right
This guide concerns a personal purchase from a UK seller, even where the goods come from China. A consumer is an individual buying wholly or mainly outside their trade, business, craft or profession. Buying stock for your business is different. Identify the seller on the order confirmation and distinguish a goods purchase from a separate sourcing service.
Ask Trading Standards or a consumer adviser to confirm whether your online or phone purchase carries change-of-mind cancellation rights and whether any exception applies, particularly for made-to-measure or personalised goods. Use our personal cancellation guide to check eligibility and our cancellation-period guide to check your dates. This guide addresses what to do when the seller's return process obstructs your notice.
Send clear notice through another route
Where the cancellation right applies, you may use the model cancellation form or another clear statement of your decision. The seller's website form is optional. A broken portal or refusal to issue return authorisation therefore does not make authorisation a prerequisite for cancellation. Send your notice promptly to the seller's published email or postal contact rather than waiting for the portal to recover.
Write: “I am cancelling my personal purchase of [item], order reference [reference]. This is my cancellation notice. Your returns portal is unavailable or has refused authorisation. Please acknowledge receipt and provide the return address and arrangements.” Replace the portal explanation with what actually happened. Avoid wording that merely asks whether cancellation might be possible.
Preserve proof of the notice and its date
For a cancellation communication sent to the seller, the rules treat it as within the cancellation period if it is sent before that period ends. In a dispute, you must show that you cancelled within the period in accordance with the rules. A screenshot of a broken portal records the obstruction; keep separate evidence of the cancellation notice itself.
Save the complete message, recipient address, sending date and time, attachments and any acknowledgement. For post, retain a copy of the notice and proof of posting. Capture the portal error with its page address and date, and save any refusal. If an email bounces or a form fails to submit, promptly use another published contact route and retain the failure record.
Arrange the return without losing its deadline
Cancellation notice and physical return are separate steps. Unless the seller is responsible for collection, send back or hand over the goods without undue delay, no later than 14 days after the day you inform the seller. Do not assume portal downtime pauses this deadline. Ask promptly for the return address, collection arrangements and postage responsibility.
The rules specify the return address hierarchy: the seller's stated return address; if none, its stated contact address; if neither, a place of business of the seller. Check these against your order documents. Do not guess that a factory or the sender printed on the original parcel is the correct recipient. Use our personal return shipping guide for carrier and paperwork checks after identifying the correct destination.

Keep any continuing refusal in writing
If the seller insists that only its portal can cancel the order, repeat your clear notice and refer to the rule allowing another clear statement. Ask it to explain any separate reason it believes the purchase has no cancellation right. Keep the original sending date visible in follow-up correspondence and distinguish a disputed cancellation right from a missing return reference.
If dispatch remains blocked, record exactly what is missing and seek consumer advice promptly with your order, notice and correspondence. Keep the goods and packing available, document attempts to arrange return, and ask for a workable address or collection proposal. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can help coordinate factory return details where involved; preserve your direct correspondence with the UK seller.
Frequently asked questions
Can a seller make me cancel through its returns portal?
Where UK consumer cancellation rights apply, the website form is optional. You may send another clear statement of your decision to cancel. Keep proof of the message and when you sent it.
Do I need return authorisation before cancelling?
Authorisation is not a prerequisite for giving a valid cancellation notice under these rules. Send clear notice in time, then arrange the correct return destination separately.
What proof should I keep if the returns portal is broken?
Save dated screenshots of the error or refusal, plus the complete cancellation notice, recipient details and sending evidence. Keep acknowledgements, bounced messages and postal receipts where relevant.
Does a broken portal extend my return deadline?
Do not assume it does. Unless the seller is responsible for collection, return the goods without undue delay and no later than 14 days after the day you notify it. Seek advice promptly if return remains blocked.
