Buying a wood-burning stove from China for a UK home
Before paying, confirm your address's smoke-control status, match the exact stove to its compliance and exemption evidence, and have an installer assess the flue and room. Agree the installation approval route for your UK nation before ordering. For factory-side document and shipment checks, contact Cambridge China Bridge.

Start with the address and intended fuel
Ask your council's environmental services team whether the home is in a smoke control area. In such areas, wood can only be burned in an exempt appliance. Before choosing a supplier, establish whether the exact model has an exemption relevant to your UK nation.
Find the model in the official exempt-appliance records and read its entry, including the permitted fuels and conditions. Exempt-appliance listings identify which unauthorised fuels the appliance may burn. Match the manufacturer, model suffix, instructions and any specified air-control modification to the stove being offered. Keep a copy for your installer.
Build an evidence file for the exact appliance
For ecodesign compliance, a declaration of conformity supported by technical documentation is required. Ask for the declaration, underlying efficiency and emissions reports, appliance label photographs, and English installation and operating instructions. Have a compliance adviser check the requirements for your destination and intended use. Our construction-products guide explains the wider performance-document checks.
Reconcile the documents with the actual firebox, door, baffle, air controls, flue outlet and fuel specification. Ask the issuing laboratory to confirm the report and covered configuration; use our test-report verification guide. Treat a catalogue logo or a report for a similar stove as an unresolved gap. Ask separately for product-compliance evidence and smoke-control exemption evidence.
Have the flue and room assessed before ordering
Give your proposed installer the complete appliance file and arrange a site visit before paying a deposit. Ask them to assess chimney condition, flue dimensions and route, liner suitability, draught, terminal position and access for sweeping. An outlet that fits an adapter is insufficient evidence that the chimney will work with the stove.
Ask for a written proposal covering heat output for the room, hearth, clearances to combustible materials, combustion air, extractor fans and carbon monoxide alarm provision. Request the manufacturer's flue and draught specifications rather than choosing dimensions from a marketplace listing. Price the installation and any chimney work alongside the delivered appliance.
Agree the route in your UK nation
Send the appliance file and proposed stove, hearth and flue work to the installer and relevant local building team. Establish who will handle the application or notification, inspections and completion records before placing the order. Registered competent-person installers can self-certify work within their scheme's scope; check that scope for your actual project.
In Scotland, a flue or chimney may need a building warrant or planning permission depending on its design and position. In Northern Ireland, tell the council about proposed building work and ask it to confirm the route for this installation. Use the contacts below to obtain a project-specific answer rather than assuming an installer certificate settles every approval.
| Home location | Practical next step |
|---|---|
| England | Ask whether a suitably registered installer can self-certify the complete work; otherwise discuss the application with building control. |
| Wales | Confirm the installer's scheme scope and the Welsh route with the relevant building control team. |
| Scotland | Ask the council's building standards team whether the stove and associated flue or hearth work need a warrant, and what completion records to retain. |
| Northern Ireland | Discuss the complete proposal with council building control; confirm the application, inspections and completion documentation. |
Make payment depend on resolved checks
Put the accepted model, configuration, documents and instructions into the purchase specification. Require written approval before the factory changes combustion components or substitutes another model. Before shipment, check the production stove's label, controls, components and packing against that file. Follow our balance-payment checklist for the wider payment checks.
Hold the purchase if exemption records cannot be matched, reports describe another configuration, or your installer cannot support the proposed installation. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate factory-side document collection and inspection through its staff in China. Keep the site assessment, agreed approval route, commissioning records and completion paperwork with the appliance file.
Frequently asked questions
Can I burn wood in a smoke control area?
Only in an exempt appliance. Check the exact model's record for your UK nation, permitted fuel and conditions before buying.
Does a CE logo prove the stove is suitable?
A logo alone cannot establish suitability for your home. Check the exact model's declarations, reports, smoke-control exemption where relevant, and your installer's site assessment.
Can I use my existing chimney?
Have an installer assess its condition, dimensions, liner, draught and route against the stove's instructions before ordering. Include any remedial work in the purchase decision.
Who approves a wood-burning stove installation?
Confirm the route locally: scheme self-certification or building control in England and Wales, a warrant check in Scotland, and council building control in Northern Ireland.
