Buying office and swivel chairs from Anji

Use Anji's chair cluster to compare complete chairs and investigate their component supply chains. Shortlist against a shared specification, visit the proposed assembly site, and witness agreed trials on identifiable samples before approving production. Visits and sample checks can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Treat Anji as a supply chain

Anji, in Zhejiang, is a swivel-chair manufacturing cluster. Its ecosystem includes chair design, manufacturing and sales, with specialist suppliers contributing to product development. This makes it useful for investigating how a chair is built, rather than simply browsing finished designs.

For each candidate, map who supplies the mechanism, gas lift, base, castors, arms, upholstery and frame. Ask which parts the chair supplier makes, which it buys and who controls their specification. Use our factory versus trading company guide for the wider seller checks.

Separate assemblers from component specialists

A complete-chair assembler may buy its main components and still control assembly, incoming checks and finished-chair testing. A component specialist may understand a mechanism or moulding thoroughly without taking responsibility for the complete chair. Ask the proposed order supplier to explain where its responsibility starts and ends.

Request a component schedule with maker, model reference, material and drawing revision where relevant. Confirm who checks fit between the gas lift, mechanism and base, and between castors and sockets. Similar-looking parts are not enough to approve a substitution. Our factory capability guide covers how to investigate claimed processes.

Make showroom comparisons repeatable

Send the same brief to shortlisted suppliers: intended users, workplace or home use, desk arrangement, flooring, adjustments, upholstery and assembly method. Ask them to prepare the quoted configurations, not just their preferred display chairs. Record seat dimensions, adjustment ranges, control positions, back support and the component references behind each quote.

Compare chairs using the same tasks: adjust the seat, reach the controls, swivel, recline and move across the intended floor surface. Record comfort comments separately from measured observations. Photograph labels and controls with permission, and note every difference between the showroom chair and the offered specification. Use our product specification guide to turn the comparison into an order brief.

Book visits around the proposed production

Confirm showroom and factory addresses separately. Arrange access to the assembly line, incoming component checks, upholstery work, packing and test area relevant to your chair. Ask for the production and quality staff to attend. Where a critical component is bought in, request a specialist visit or traceable supporting records.

Follow a component from its incoming label through assembly to the finished-chair record. Look at how staff handle mismatched parts, loose fixings, damaged mesh and rejected mechanisms. Compare the actual checks with the proposed specification. Before travel, agree whether the visit will include sample assembly and trials, and have the necessary parts and equipment prepared.

Witness trials before approving production

Agree a written trial plan identifying the sample, component configuration, procedure, equipment, acceptance criteria and witnesses. Have trained staff run controlled stability, strength and durability trials; use seated trials for fit and controls. Record height retention, tilt-lock engagement, swivel movement, castor retention, noise and looseness before and after the agreed procedure. Do not improvise destructive tests with a person seated.

Retain photographs, observations and results, including failures and interrupted trials. A showroom demonstration does not establish durability, and a witnessed factory trial does not replace laboratory evidence. Ask a testing specialist to define the evidence needed for the intended use and destination. Our furniture safety and freight guide covers the broader purchasing questions.

Approve an identifiable complete sample and its component schedule together. Require written approval for changes, then agree which checks will be repeated on production chairs. Include unpacking, assembly instructions, component identification and replacement-part fit. Cambridge China Bridge can use its own staff in China to coordinate comparisons, factory visits and witnessed sample checks.

Frequently asked questions

Is Anji a good place to source office chairs?

Anji has a chair-manufacturing cluster with design, production and specialist suppliers. Use that access to compare complete chairs and investigate components, then assess each supplier against your specification.

Does an Anji chair factory make all its own parts?

Do not assume so. Request a component schedule and separate in-house work from bought-in parts. Check how the assembler controls incoming quality, component compatibility and substitutions.

What should I compare in an office chair showroom?

Compare the quoted configuration, seat dimensions, adjustments, control access, back support and movement on the intended flooring. Record comfort separately and identify differences from the chair offered for production.

Can I witness office chair sample testing in Anji?

Arrange it before the visit. Agree the sample identity, procedure, equipment, acceptance criteria and witnesses. Keep failure records and results, and obtain laboratory evidence separately where your testing plan calls for it.
