Buying a pottery wheel from China for home use
Check the exact wheel's protection from clay water, electrical supply, pedal response, reachable moving parts, stability under centring pressure and cleaning method. Ask for model-specific instructions and a recorded demonstration before ordering. Factory documents and checks in China can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Specify the exact wheel and intended use
Ask for the model name, nameplate photograph, electrical diagram and English operating manual before paying. Describe your clay work, proposed room, floor, seating and cleaning arrangements in the product specification. Confirm that the quoted wheel, pedal, splash pan and electrical components match the documents and demonstration.
Keeping the wheel for yourself does not settle its compliance position. Our own-use import guide covers that separate review. Here, HSE workplace guidance is used as a safety reference for household checks. If you also plan business use or classes, tell your adviser before ordering.
Trace where clay water could reach electrics
Ask the factory to show the splash pan joints, spindle opening, underside, motor housing, control enclosure, pedal and cable entries. Where could splashes, an overflowing pan or a wet floor reach electrical parts? Request model-specific evidence for claimed water protection, including which components it covers. A splash pan alone does not establish electrical protection; see our waterproof claims guide.
Have a UK electrician review supply compatibility, earthing or insulation arrangements, plug, cable and residual current protection for the proposed location. HSE advises consulting a competent person if supply safety remains uncertain. Keep connections away from splash and pooling areas, and ask how to isolate power with dry hands. Do not pour water onto an energised sample to test a claim.
Observe pedal response and stopping behaviour
Request a continuous demonstration showing the pedal and wheelhead together, with and without clay. Check smooth starting, low-speed control, speed changes under centring pressure and stopping. Does lifting your foot stop rotation or leave the selected speed running? Neither behaviour should be guessed from the pedal's appearance. Ask for the stopping method and residual rotation to be explained in the manual.
HSE guidance advises clearly marked control switches. Check that power, direction and stop functions are identifiable and reachable from the working position. Ask a competent tester to check power restoration and pedal disconnection under a safe test plan. Agree that unintended starting, unexplained acceleration or failure to stop blocks acceptance. Check whether the pedal slides or can be pressed accidentally.
Inspect moving parts and stability
With power disconnected and rotation stopped, inspect accessible gaps around the wheelhead, spindle, removable throwing plate, splash pan and underside. Ask a machinery specialist to assess trapping and entanglement risks, including access to belts, pulleys and shafts. Do not probe gaps while running. Confirm which covers are guards and whether routine pan removal exposes drive parts. Plan to keep loose clothing, hair, children and pets clear.
Request a demonstration of centring clay on the intended stand, within the manufacturer's stated working limits. Look for rocking, sliding, wheelhead wobble, loosening legs and movement between the wheel and its support. Check levelling feet, fasteners, floor suitability and comfortable reach to the pedal. Do not accept unloaded spinning as the entire stability check, or improvise supports to disguise rocking.

Obtain a usable cleaning and acceptance plan
Require instructions showing how to switch off, disconnect power, wait for rotation to stop and remove clay without exposing electrical parts. Identify which detachable parts may be washed separately, which surfaces need wiping, permitted cleaning products and how to dry and reassemble them. Ask how to empty the pan without spilling onto cables or the pedal. Treat rinsing the whole machine or hosing it down as unacceptable unless specifically supported by the manufacturer and reviewed by a competent specialist.
Put these observations and document checks into a factory acceptance plan. Record the inspected model, supplied accessories, defects and agreed corrections. Repeat relevant checks after delivery because transport and assembly can change condition. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can obtain factory explanations and record agreed checks; arrange specialist electrical assessment separately.
Frequently asked questions
Is a splash pan enough to make a pottery wheel safe?
A pan collects clay water but does not establish electrical protection. Check water paths towards the motor, controls, pedal and cable entries, and request evidence for the exact model.
Should a pottery wheel stop when I lift my foot?
Check the exact design. Some pedals retain a selected speed. Ask for a demonstration and clear instructions explaining foot release, the stop control and remaining rotation.
Can I hose down an electric pottery wheel?
Do not assume so. Obtain model-specific cleaning instructions identifying washable detachable parts and wipe-only areas. Disconnect power and wait for rotation to stop before cleaning.
How do I check pottery wheel stability before buying?
Ask for centring to be demonstrated within the manufacturer's working limits on the intended support. Look for rocking, sliding, wobble and loose fixings, then check the delivered wheel on your floor.
