Getting started

Can I use a Chinese heating-oil tank at home?

Potentially, but get an oil-tank installer to assess the exact model and your property before paying. Agree the evidence, containment, location, fire protection, approval route and inspection access in writing. Hold the order if acceptance conditions remain unresolved. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate factory evidence through its staff in China.

Start with the property and installer

Building regulations differ between England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Have an installer experienced in domestic heating-oil storage identify the requirements for your address. The England guidance discussed here should not be treated as an installation specification for every UK home.

Arrange a site visit before choosing the tank. Give the installer the proposed fuel, capacity, material, dimensions, installation instructions and location photographs. Ask for written acceptance conditions covering the exact model, including whether an existing base or pipework can be reused.

Match the evidence to the actual tank

Request the manufacturer's identity, model and batch identification, drawings, material specification, fuel compatibility, leak-test records and installation and maintenance instructions in English. Ask the installer and a compliance specialist which product standards, declarations and markings apply. Our construction materials guide covers the wider declaration and marking checks.

Match reports to the tank's material, capacity, construction and supplied fittings. Check the fill connection, vent, outlet, gauge and any integral containment against the drawings. A certificate for another model leaves the proposed tank unassessed. Use our test-report verification guide to investigate report coverage and authenticity.

Get a written containment assessment

Commission a site-specific pollution-risk assessment and ask whether secondary containment, often called a bund, is needed. Have the installer consider capacity, drains, manholes, streams, wells, groundwater protection and where spilled oil could travel. Include whether the delivery driver can see the vent outlet during filling.

Ask for a drawing showing the usable containment capacity, resistance to oil and water, connections and inspection access. A supplier's description of a double wall does not establish its ability to retain a spill. Have the installer review the complete containment arrangement, including penetrations, rainwater management and how a leak would be detected.

Approve the location and fire protection

England's Approved Document J covers fuel storage; Approved Documents provide guidance on ways to meet building regulations. Ask the installer to record the applicable separation distances and any alternative fire-protection design on a measured site drawing. Include buildings, openings, eaves, boundaries, combustible structures and the proposed base.

Approved Document J describes fire walls as imperforate, non-combustible walls or screens, such as masonry walls or fire-rated composite panel screens. If a screen is proposed, ask for its construction, performance evidence, dimensions and support details. Also agree vegetation control, pipe routing and fire-isolation arrangements before approving the location.

Agree the building approval route

A scheme-registered installer can self-certify work that complies with building standards. Before relying on this route, verify that their current registration covers the proposed oil-storage work. Ask who will handle notification and which compliance paperwork you will receive.

If that route is unavailable, ask the local building control service to confirm the application, inspection and completion arrangements before work starts. Record who submits drawings, books inspections and closes outstanding conditions. Ask separately whether planning permission or property restrictions need investigation. Keep the approval correspondence with the tank specification.

Protect inspection access through to handover

Agree access for checking the tank, containment, connections, gauge, vent and valves after installation. Show how an inspector will reach and view them without dismantling permanent structures. Confirm the delivery hose route, filling access, replacement route and maintenance space before adding fences, cladding or landscaping.

Before shipment, compare the finished tank and fittings with the reviewed specification. Use our inspection and shipment approval guide for separate release decisions. On arrival, have the installer check damage and document matches before installation. Agree leak checks, commissioning, completion paperwork and maintenance instructions before authorising the first fill.

Frequently asked questions

Can a UK installer fit a heating-oil tank from China?

Potentially. Ask an experienced oil-tank installer to review the exact model, evidence and property before buying. Obtain written acceptance conditions and resolve them before shipment.

Is a double-walled oil tank the same as a bunded tank?

Do not rely on the description alone. Ask for containment drawings and capacity evidence, and have the installer assess spill retention, connections and leak detection.

How close can my oil tank be to my house or boundary?

Have the installer mark the applicable distances and any fire-protection design on a measured drawing. Include openings, eaves and nearby structures; agree the arrangement before ordering.

Do I need building approval for an imported oil tank?

Confirm the route before installation. Check whether a scheme-registered installer can self-certify your oil-storage work, or ask local building control to confirm the application and inspection arrangements.
