Start with the importer’s TIN registration
The Ministry of Finance’s customs procedures require economic operators, including importers, to register with its Inland Revenue Department, which issues the Taxpayer Identification Number. Start by asking your broker to check the importing entity’s registration details.
Send the broker your product specification and intended arrival port before committing to production. Ask for written confirmation of any product approvals, certificates or labelling needed for that shipment, and pass the resulting checklist to us before approving packaging.
Agree what your own customs broker will handle
Appoint your own broker in Somalia to confirm the final entry, classification, valuation and applicable duties and taxes. Agree who will submit the declaration, answer customs queries, coordinate any examination and organise collection after release.
Give the broker draft documents before shipment so discrepancies can be corrected while the goods remain in China. Our guide for buyers outside the UK explains the wider division between sourcing work and destination clearance.
Prepare the factory and shipment documents
The Ministry’s supporting-document list includes a commercial invoice, packing list and copy of the house bill of lading endorsed by the local shipping agent. It lists a certificate of origin when required. Ask your broker to confirm whether that condition applies to your goods.
We coordinate with the Chinese factory to prepare the commercial invoice and packing list, arrange a certificate of origin where requested, and obtain available test reports for the ordered model. We check descriptions, quantities, weights and consignee details across the document pack. Send reports to your broker for review before treating them as acceptable for your shipment.
Check the supplier and inspect before shipment
Our own staff in China check the supplier’s business identity, production location and ability to make the specified goods. We compare the quoted model with samples and supporting reports, clarify any subcontracting, and record the agreed materials, finish, functions and packaging.
Before shipment, we inspect production against the approved specification and sample, check quantities and carton markings, and document defects for correction. Agree the inspection scope and shipment approval process in advance. Factory audits and inspections are usually included in the quote; complex checks that need a third party are charged separately and agreed in advance.

Request a quote to your own Somali port
Send the product details, quantity, intended use, packaging and named destination port. Ask the quote to identify the delivery term, freight, insurance and destination charges included or excluded. Keep your broker’s clearance costs, duties, taxes and onward delivery visible in your own landed-cost comparison.
Our buy through a UK company service explains the purchasing arrangement. If comparing regional routes, use the Kenya guide and Ethiopia guide to frame questions for your broker about each route.
