Importing from China to Costa Rica: Importer register

Start with importer registration. Costa Rica's customs rules require habitual importers to register, and Hacienda reminds importers conducting commercial activity of that obligation. Have your own broker confirm your position and final entry. For sourcing and a quote to your Costa Rican port, work with Cambridge China Bridge.

Start with your importer registration

Costa Rica's published customs resolution says habitual importers must register with the national customs valuation and verification body, which assigns a registration number. Hacienda also reminds importers carrying out commercial activity in Costa Rica that compliance with the importer-registration provision is obligatory. Ask your own Costa Rican customs broker to check your registration before committing to a factory.

Send the broker your product description, intended use, materials and model details. Request a written checklist of any applicable product registration, certification, labelling or import permissions. Have them identify what must be settled before production or shipment, then send that checklist to us.

Agree a quote to your Costa Rican port

Give us your specification, quantity, packing requirements and destination port. We can quote through our UK company to your own Costa Rican port. Ask the quotation to state the delivery term, freight, insurance arrangements and destination charges left for you, so you can compare offers on the same basis.

Use our overseas buying guide for the wider service and buying through a UK company for the purchasing arrangement. Keep the port quotation and your broker's estimate of local clearance, handling and onward delivery together when planning your budget.

Settle the factory documents before dispatch

We coordinate the commercial invoice and packing list with the Chinese factory under the agreed selling arrangement. Have your broker review the named seller and importer, descriptions, values and delivery term. Check that the packing list matches the finished shipment's carton counts, quantities and weights.

Where your broker requests a certificate of origin, we coordinate it with the exporter. We obtain the factory's available test reports or arrange agreed testing. Ask the broker to confirm the acceptable issuer and evidence for your product. Match reports to the actual model and materials, and approve label artwork before printing.

Check the supplier and inspect the finished goods

Our own staff in China check the supplier's identity, production location and capability against your brief. We establish where the goods will be made, review relevant equipment and processes, and ask about subcontracting. Keep the approved sample, specification and agreed document list together as the purchasing reference.

Before shipment, we inspect the finished order against the approved sample and specification, covering agreed checks of function, finish, quantities, packaging and labels. Record defects, corrections and the shipment-release decision. Keep inspection findings separate from laboratory test evidence and the broker's assessment of import requirements.

Arrange arrival clearance with your own broker

Agree with your Costa Rican customs broker that they will confirm the final entry, classification and valuation, prepare the declaration, calculate local duties and taxes, and coordinate clearance and release. Send them the agreed document pack and the carrier's transport document. Ask them to flag any action needed before arrival.

If you also buy for neighbouring markets, use the Colombia guide and Mexico guide as separate destination checklists. For this order, send Cambridge China Bridge your Costa Rican port and broker-approved requirements before we book shipment.
