Getting started

Buying brewing equipment from China for home use

Yes, you can source brewing equipment from China for personal use. HMRC exempts producers making only non-spirit alcoholic products for their own domestic use from producer approval. Check the equipment separately, and establish the position before selling or supplying drinks at club events. Discuss the factory specification with Cambridge China Bridge.

Establish whether the drink is only for domestic use

HMRC's producer-approval exemption applies if you only produce alcoholic products, excluding spirits, for your own domestic use. This covers making beer or wine under that condition. The exemption concerns your production activity; assess the equipment's materials, installation and safety separately.

Before making batches intended for sale, establish the approval route with HMRC: outside an exemption, approval is needed before production starts. Ask HMRC about any proposed club supply, including free tastings, rather than assuming domestic use covers it. HMRC also states that an approved producer's own domestic consumption is liable for Alcohol Duty.

Specify the whole liquid path

List every component that touches ingredients or drink: vessels, valves, pumps, hoses, seals, taps and filling fittings. Describe hot processing, acidic wine, alcohol contact, storage and cleaning chemicals. Ask for material identification and supporting evidence matched to those uses. Our food-contact guide explains the general rules and material-specific declarations.

Do not accept 'food grade stainless steel' as the entire specification. Agree the steel grade, internal finish, weld treatment and seal materials. Ask how valves dismantle, where liquid can remain trapped and whether the vessel drains completely. Require approval before the factory changes any component in the liquid path.

Check heating, pressure and installation before ordering

Give a UK installer the proposed drawings and equipment schedule before paying a deposit. Confirm electrical supply, heating load, isolation, drainage, ventilation and space for cleaning. For pressurised fermentation or carbonation, ask a competent specialist to review the vessel rating, relief devices, controls and connections. Specify how fermentation gas escapes safely.

Request model-specific instructions, drawings and conformity documents, and check that they describe the actual configuration being supplied. Use our catering equipment guide for the broader equipment checks and our certification guide for document and marking checks. Agree a factory demonstration covering leaks, controls, draining and cleaning access, with spare seals and service parts identified.

Resolve alcohol licensing before club events

In England and Wales, retail alcohol sales and supply by or on behalf of a club are licensable activities. Qualifying members' clubs can operate under club premises certificates instead of premises licences. Ask the council licensing team whether the venue's existing authorisation covers your proposed event or whether another route, such as a temporary event notice, is appropriate.

Describe who makes and owns the drink, who receives it, whether guests or the public attend, and how tickets, donations or drink charges work. Ask for advice on that exact arrangement before promising a tasting or fundraiser. For events in Scotland or Northern Ireland, ask the relevant local authority about the applicable route. Use our shared club equipment guide for purchase authority, venue permission and insurance checks.

Settle food safety and approve the factory brief

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, Food Standards Agency guidance says supplying food free of charge can still require food-business registration. The local authority may decide registration is unnecessary for very limited, infrequent activity. Ask its food safety team how your brewing and event plans should be treated, including hygiene, allergen information and any bottle labelling.

Keep recipes, ingredient information, cleaning records and batch identification as practical preparation for supplying drinks. Before ordering, bring together the intended use, component list, installation review, factory test plan and unresolved questions. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can coordinate factory documents and inspect the agreed build; obtain HMRC and council advice directly for the proposed production and event arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need HMRC approval to brew beer for myself?

HMRC exempts producers who only make non-spirit alcoholic products for their own domestic use. Recheck with HMRC before changing to production intended for sale or club supply.

Can I sell homemade wine made with Chinese equipment?

Establish HMRC producer approval before making wine intended for sale. Also resolve alcohol licensing and food-business requirements for the proposed operation. The equipment's origin does not answer those questions.

Can I give homebrew away at a club event?

Ask HMRC and the council about the exact arrangement before supplying it. In England and Wales, supply by or on behalf of a club is a licensable activity. Explain any admission charge, donation or ticket arrangement.

What should I ask a Chinese brewing equipment factory?

Ask for liquid-path materials, use-specific evidence, cleaning access, pressure and heating details, model-specific documents, a demonstration of the agreed build, and available seals and service parts.
