Buying a borehole pump from China: what to check

Confirm the abstraction route with the regulator for your UK nation, assess the borehole's yield and water quality, and obtain an installer-approved specification before ordering. Drinking use needs a separate safety assessment. Factory checks against that brief can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Confirm the abstraction permission route

Before paying a deposit, contact the Environment Agency in England, Natural Resources Wales in Wales, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency in Scotland or the Northern Ireland Environment Agency in Northern Ireland. Abstraction can require a licence or authorisation. Ask the relevant regulator to confirm the route for your actual site and proposed use.

Send the borehole location, intended uses, estimated daily abstraction and details of other withdrawals from the same source. For an existing borehole, obtain its permission documents and ask whether the proposed use or replacement pump changes anything. Keep the regulator's response and resolve any required permission before committing to equipment.

Assess the borehole before selecting a pump

In England, check the groundwater investigation consent process with the Environment Agency before arranging drilling or a pumping test. Elsewhere, ask the relevant regulator about the investigation route. Have a borehole specialist assess construction records, casing condition, usable internal diameter, depth, sediment and possible contamination sources.

Ask for a pumping-test report recording flow, standing water level, water level during pumping and recovery afterwards. Have the specialist explain sustainable yield and seasonal uncertainty. A deeper borehole or a more powerful pump does not establish a reliable supply. Agree whether storage is needed to meet demand without exceeding the assessed yield.

Separate garden use from drinking-water use

List every intended outlet and use, including irrigation, toilets, drinking and cooking. Before drinking use, ask the local council's environmental health team for advice on private-supply assessment, sampling and the applicable local arrangements. Agree the testing plan with a competent laboratory or water specialist. Clear-looking water and a pump described as suitable for drinking water do not establish that the source is safe.

Ask the specialist to interpret microbiological and chemical results and specify any treatment, maintenance and ongoing checks. Obtain evidence for the pump's water-contact materials separately. Our home water filter guide covers treatment claims and consumables. If mains backup is planned, use the separation and backflow questions in our rainwater system guide.

Obtain an installer-approved specification

Have the installer approve the required flow and total head using the water level during pumping, outlet elevation, required outlet pressure and pipe losses. Include treatment and storage in that calculation. Ask the installer to select the operating point on the pump curve, rather than buying by motor power, maximum head or maximum flow alone.

Record pump diameter, setting depth, sediment tolerance, materials, power supply, cable and joints, controls, dry-running protection and retrieval arrangements in the product specification. Agree electrical installation and commissioning responsibilities locally. Our water pumps guide covers general performance and factory testing checks.

Make the order and handover verifiable

Send the approved specification to the factory and obtain the exact model's curve, dimensions, materials list, electrical details and installation instructions. Agree evidence of performance at the specified operating point and prohibit substitutions without approval. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can compare the proposed and supplied equipment with that brief.

Before ordering, confirm who will install, service and retrieve the pump, and obtain references for replacement controls, seals and other service parts. Agree a handover record covering measured flow and pressure, water-level behaviour, protection controls and any drinking-water assessment. Keep permission records, source reports and installer acceptance together.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need permission for a garden borehole pump?

Check with the abstraction regulator for your UK nation before buying. Provide the site, intended use, daily volume and other withdrawals from the same source, then obtain confirmation of the applicable route.

Can I drink water from my borehole?

Do not decide from appearance or a pump's description. Arrange a source assessment and suitable testing, then have a specialist confirm treatment, maintenance and ongoing checks before drinking use.

What size borehole pump do I need?

Ask your installer to specify flow and total head using pumping water level, outlet pressure and system losses. Match the pump curve to that duty and the borehole's assessed sustainable yield.

Can I replace my borehole pump with a larger one?

Ask the regulator whether your permission route changes, and have the source yield reassessed. Obtain installer approval for the new operating point, cable, controls and protection before ordering.
