How to assess a home vacuum sealer from China
Assess the machine and its bags together: check food-contact evidence, trial the intended foods, inspect seals after storage and demonstrate cleaning. Keep food storage instructions separate from the seller's shelf-life promises. Ask Cambridge China Bridge to coordinate factory samples and checks.

Define the machine and bag combination
Ask whether the model uses external suction or a vacuum chamber, and which textured or smooth bags it accepts. Obtain the bag specification, compatible widths, sealing settings and restrictions on moist foods or liquids. Trial the replacement bags you intend to sell, alongside those supplied with the machine.
Put the intended foods, storage conditions, operating pauses and acceptance checks into your product specification. Ask the factory to demonstrate bag positioning, cancellation and manual sealing. A demonstration with an empty bag does not establish performance with food.
Match food-contact evidence to the actual bags
Request the bag supplier's declaration of compliance and supporting migration reports, identifying the actual material construction and intended use. Check coverage for fatty or acidic foods, freezing, heating and reuse where claimed. A bag that seals successfully has only demonstrated machine compatibility. Our food-contact materials guide explains the general paperwork.
Match documents to the bag manufacturer, product reference and production supplied. Follow our test report verification guide when checking laboratory evidence. Do not infer cooking suitability from freezer suitability, or accept a report for a different film. Ask for written approval before the factory substitutes bags.
Check seals through the intended storage journey
Trial dry foods, moist foods and delicate foods within the stated operating limits. Keep the sealing area clean, dry and flat. Inspect the entire seal for wrinkles, gaps, trapped food, scorching and separation. Record the bag, food, setting and failure, rather than relying on how tightly the bag initially hugs its contents.
Recheck packs after handling and the intended chilled or frozen storage. Look for air returning, leakage, punctures and seal lifting. Agree a repeatable leak or seal-strength check with the factory or laboratory where needed. Treat these as packaging performance checks, not proof of microbiological safety; discard trial food if its storage history is uncertain.
Demonstrate cleaning before approving the sample
Unplug the machine and let the sealing area cool before cleaning. Ask the factory to demonstrate removal, washing, drying and refitting of the drip tray and any removable seals. Check access to grooves where food liquid collects, and ask what to do if liquid reaches the suction path. Confirm which parts may be immersed or put in a dishwasher.
The Food Standards Agency advises washing kitchen items thoroughly between tasks to avoid spreading harmful bacteria. Build that into instructions for switching from raw food to ready-to-eat food. Follow the appliance's cleaning instructions and the cleaner's directions. Do not approve a reusable-bag claim without a demonstrated cleaning method and supporting suitability evidence.

Approve storage advice separately from shelf-life claims
The Food Standards Agency warns that Clostridium botulinum may grow without oxygen under certain conditions. A tight pack is therefore not a reason to keep perishable food in a cupboard or extend its use-by date. Ask for food-specific evidence behind any shelf-life claim, including preparation and storage conditions. Business vacuum-packing guidance should not be turned into a household storage guarantee.
For home instructions, follow the food label and current official advice. The Food Standards Agency recommends a fridge setting between 0 and 5°C; this is not a guarantee of vacuum-packed shelf-life. UK guidance warns that eating food after its use-by date could cause illness. Retain original food dates when repacking, label the packing date separately, and follow food-specific freezing and thawing instructions.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use any bags with a vacuum sealer?
Do not assume so. Confirm the required bag texture, material and width, then trial the intended replacement bags. Check food-contact suitability separately from sealing performance.
How do I check a vacuum sealer's seal?
Inspect the full seal for gaps, wrinkles and trapped food. Recheck after handling and intended storage for air returning or leakage. Agree a repeatable performance check; appearance alone cannot prove food safety.
Does vacuum sealing extend the use-by date?
Do not extend the date based on the machine seller's claim. Retain the original food instructions and dates. A successful seal is not evidence that a longer storage period is safe.
What should I check when cleaning a vacuum sealer?
Check access to the drip tray, grooves and removable seals. Demonstrate cleaning, drying and refitting. Confirm washing restrictions and what to do if food liquid enters the suction path.
