Getting started

Buying end-of-line smart stock with short support

Assess the support left at the latest likely customer purchase, not just at your buying date. Match the published end date to the exact stock, disclose it clearly and secure credible supplier commitments before paying. If the remaining window does not suit expected use, seek an evidenced extension or decline. Discuss the checks with Cambridge China Bridge.

Start with the exact stock and your role

Match the reserved stock to the manufacturer's model, hardware revision, firmware and published support page. Old packaging or a similar model name can point to a different support commitment. Use our stock-lot guide for provenance, grades and reservation checks rather than treating a security review as the whole buying assessment.

Retailers have PSTI duties too. Establish whether you are distributing UK-held stock, importing it yourself or selling under your own brand before allocating document checks. Our PSTI guide covers scope, roles and the statement of compliance; this guide focuses on whether the remaining support makes a seasonal clearance purchase sensible.

Assess support from the last likely sale

Official guidance says the published support information must give the minimum length of time security updates will be provided, along with an end date. Obtain the actual calendar end date for each variant and reconcile it with the statement of compliance. Our security update period guide helps with that document check.

Map receipt, listing, seasonal sale, delayed sell-through and likely customer activation against that end date. Assess the interval between the latest likely purchase and support expiry. A sale that finishes before expiry can still leave customers with little supported use. Do not assume buying or activating the product restarts its published support period.

Judge that remaining window against expected use and dependence on connected features. Ask what happens to updates, account access, the app and cloud services after expiry. Treat those as separate questions: an app that still opens is not evidence of continuing security support, and update support does not by itself establish cloud-service continuity.

Make the listing match the evidence

Consumer protection guidance prohibits misleading omissions likely to cause the average consumer to take a different decision. For this stock, put the verified security support end date near the connected-feature description where buyers can see it before purchase. Explain that the remaining period is short rather than relying on a link hidden in technical details.

Review your website, marketplace listings, packaging images and sales scripts together. Remove unsupported claims such as ongoing updates or long-term connected use. Distinguish security updates from the commercial warranty and app availability. Save the approved listing and support-page evidence, and recheck them if the sale slips or the manufacturer changes its publication.

Get commitments from whoever delivers support

Ask the manufacturer to confirm the exact supported models, end date, update delivery route and security-reporting contact in writing. Identify who controls firmware releases, the app and cloud services. If a wholesaler promises an extension, seek confirmation from the party that can actually deliver it; a sales assurance alone is a weak basis for your listing.

Confirm with OPSS how changes to the published support period should be handled before relying on an extension. Make any extension a purchase condition, supported by updated manufacturer publication and consistent compliance documentation before you advertise it. Agree who handles failed update delivery, loss of connected functions, customer communications and unsold stock, with a clear remedy if the promised evidence or support is not delivered.

Set a buying gate and a stop-sale review

Before payment, require matching support evidence, the compliance statement, approved listing wording and agreed supplier commitments. Have reserved-stock samples checked for setup, update access and the advertised connected functions. A successful sample check demonstrates current behaviour; it cannot prove that future support will be delivered.

Compare the discount with preparation work, customer enquiries, returns and the possibility of unsold stock near expiry. Set a review point before the support end date and decide how delayed stock will be handled. If the window is unsuitable, reduce exposure, obtain an evidenced extension or decline the lot. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can check stock identity and pursue supplier evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Is selling before security support expires enough?

Do not use that as your buying test. Assess support left for the latest likely customer purchase, expected use, accurate listings and matching compliance evidence.

Does security support restart when a customer buys?

Do not assume it does. Use the manufacturer's published end date for the exact model and obtain written clarification if its wording is ambiguous.

What should a clearance listing say about support?

Show the verified security support end date clearly before purchase. Explain the short remaining window and avoid claims of ongoing updates unless the manufacturer supports them.

Can a supplier promise longer security support?

Seek confirmation from whoever delivers updates. Before relying on an extension, obtain updated manufacturer publication, consistent compliance documents and an agreed remedy for failure.
