How to approve curtain blackout performance

Approve production fabric and a finished curtain separately, then trial the agreed hanging arrangement. Record lighting and viewing conditions, check seams and lining, and distinguish light through the cloth from light around its edges. Agree acceptance criteria before bulk cutting. Coordinate these checks with Cambridge China Bridge.

Define what you are approving

Separate fabric opacity, finished-curtain construction and installed room darkening in the purchase specification. Opaque cloth can still leave a bright room if light enters around the heading, sides, bottom or centre opening. State whether the order covers curtain panels alone or an agreed curtain and track arrangement.

Describe acceptable and unacceptable results in words, supported by retained samples and defect photographs. If using a measured light-transmission limit, agree the laboratory method, reporting limit and acceptance threshold before testing. Avoid approving an unexplained supplier claim of “blackout”. For the underlying cloth specification, use our synthetic woven fabric guide.

Use fabric from the production order

Ask for samples cut from identified production rolls, including different positions across the usable width and different rolls or coating batches. Record colour, fabric construction, coating or backing, lining and batch identity. Keep approved physical samples with the buyer and factory so a showroom swatch does not become the only comparison.

Check each ordered colour and construction rather than assuming an approval transfers between them. Examine the cloth against backlighting for pinholes, thin patches and coating damage. Where a coating provides the light barrier, agree checks after folding and the intended cleaning process. Our coated fabric guide covers the broader material checks.

Approve the sewn curtain and lining

Request a finished sample made with production fabric, the proposed lining and the actual sewing construction. Hang it in folds and inspect width joins, needle holes, hems, heading attachments and lining edges against the light. Gently tension joins as they would be tensioned in use, and look for bright lines or exposed areas.

Confirm which layer provides the blackout effect. Check that the lining covers the intended area and stays in position when the curtain is drawn. Specify seam overlap, stitch construction and lining attachment using the approved sample. Any correction should be checked on another finished sample before bulk cutting.

Make viewing conditions repeatable

For fabric comparisons, mask the edges so light around the specimen is not mistaken for transmission through it. Record the light source, its position, specimen orientation, observer position and room lighting. Keep these conditions consistent when comparing production cloth with the retained approval sample.

Allow eyes to adjust to the darker viewing side and inspect both straight on and from the agreed oblique positions. Lock camera exposure when taking comparison photographs and retain the settings; automatic exposure can make different samples look similar. Treat photographs as supporting records. Use laboratory measurements where a numerical performance claim needs substantiation.

Trial the installation and release the batch

Hang a finished curtain on the intended track or pole at a representative window. Record curtain fullness, centre overlap, side returns, heading clearance and bottom clearance. Inspect under the daylight conditions relevant to the room. Mark light through the cloth, light through sewing and light around the installation separately, so the correction addresses the cause.

Keep fabric approval and installed acceptance as separate decisions. Record who supplies and fits the hardware, the accepted arrangement and any unresolved leakage. Give the factory a release sheet identifying the approved samples, viewing conditions and defects that require a hold. Use quality inspection to organise batch checks, and textile wash-performance approval to agree cleaning trials before repeating the blackout check.

Frequently asked questions

Does blackout fabric guarantee a dark room?

No. Light can enter around the heading, sides, bottom and centre opening even when the cloth is opaque. Approve the hanging arrangement as well as the fabric.

Can I approve blackout curtains from photos?

Use photos to record defects, with exposure settings fixed. Approve retained physical samples under agreed lighting; use laboratory testing where a measured claim matters.

Should blackout curtain seams be tested?

Yes. Inspect a sewn production sample against light, including joins, needle holes, hems and lining edges. Check it hanging in folds and under normal use tension.

Should I check blackout performance after washing?

Agree the intended cleaning process and check the finished sample afterwards for coating damage, lining movement and changed light transmission. Record the result against the original approval.
