How to approve bag and backpack loading trials

Approve a written trial using representative contents in agreed positions. Check strap attachments during carrying, operate the zip while filled, then unload and compare the bag with its original shape. Record failures and repeat the trial after corrections. Ask Cambridge China Bridge to coordinate the factory trial.

Agree the trial before loading

Use the bag construction guide to settle materials and dimensions. This approval step needs a separate trial sheet identifying the sample revision, contents, total load, packing layout, strap settings, carrying sequence and inspection points. Agree carrying duration, repetitions and the recovery interval after unloading in writing.

Businesses making, importing, distributing or selling consumer products in the UK are responsible for their safety. Treat this trial as purchasing evidence, not a certified load rating. Agree acceptance criteria before testing: attachments remain secure, straps retain their settings, the zip works as intended and any residual shape change stays within the written limits.

Control where the load sits

Use the intended contents or substitutes matching their weight, shape and rigidity. Record the weight of the contents and photograph their positions in each compartment. Soft padding alone can conceal pressure from tools, bottles or laptop corners. Record any inserts or protective sleeves used, so the factory cannot quietly improve the result.

Trial the normal packing layout and separately agreed foreseeable awkward layouts, such as uneven side pockets or a rigid item pressing against a panel. Keep each result tied to its layout. Do not rearrange the contents halfway through a failed trial and report the revised arrangement as the original pass.

Inspect straps and their attachments

Photograph the handle roots, shoulder strap anchors, reinforcement and adjustment positions before carrying. Lift, put on, carry and set down the bag using the agreed sequence and intended carrying points. Watch how the load reaches the body panels; a strong strap can still pull stitching or surrounding fabric apart.

Check for opening seams, broken stitches, fabric tearing, attachment movement and webbing slipping through adjusters. Compare strap settings before and after carrying. Stop if an attachment starts failing; use a supported fixture for further investigation rather than asking someone to carry a damaged bag. Record the failure location before unloading.

Operate the zip with the bag filled

With the contents still in their recorded positions, open and close the zip as a user would, with the bag supported. Check the full travel, corners and closure ends. Record whether the slider catches the lining, the teeth separate, the zip tape distorts or closure needs the panels squeezed together.

Repeat the operation after carrying, before removing the contents. An empty-bag demonstration does not answer whether the loaded opening works. Distinguish obstruction by contents from distortion of the bag or zip attachment, and record both. Do not force a jammed slider to produce a passing video.

Check recovery and release approval

Before loading, record the empty bag's shape and agreed dimensions using named measurement points and a consistent support surface. Photograph it loaded, immediately after unloading and after the agreed recovery interval. Inspect base sag, panel bowing, twisted openings, creased stiffeners and stretched strap roots. Separate temporary deflection from lasting change, then check that the bag still stands, closes and accepts its intended contents.

Keep the trial sheet, photographs, continuous video of the agreed sequence and a signed pass or fail decision together. Hold approval where evidence is missing or criteria fail. Follow the corrective action guide, then repeat the affected checks and complete carrying sequence on the corrected construction. Use production sample controls to carry the approved construction and trial method into batch inspection.

Frequently asked questions

What load should I use to test a backpack?

Use the intended contents or substitutes matching their weight, shape and rigidity. Agree the total load and compartment layout before testing; do not choose a convenient load after seeing the result.

Can a factory video prove strap strength?

A video can show the agreed trial, but request close photographs of attachments before and after carrying, strap settings and a written result. A lift alone does not show repeated carrying performance.

Should I test the zip while the bag is full?

Yes. Operate it with the agreed contents in place, before and after carrying. Record catching, separation, distortion and whether closing requires squeezing the panels together.

How much deformation is acceptable after carrying?

Agree limits for the design before testing. Compare named measurement points and photographs after the agreed recovery interval, and check that the bag still closes and holds its intended contents.
