Project note

Building a three-piece pet-hair kit for a new UK brand, samples first

A new UK pet-care brand wanted a quality-led three-piece pet-hair kit; we shortlisted mature existing products for each piece and quoted a sample round before any production.

Enquiry:

What the buyer asked

The buyer wanted three products in one finished kit: a carpet and upholstery scraper, a reusable self-cleaning hair roller and a push-button self-cleaning grooming brush.

They planned to validate with samples and a small first batch, then grow through 100, 500 and 1,000+ kits, delivered to the UK with duties paid, adding their own branding, colours and retail packaging later. They said plainly that this was not about the cheapest product.

What we checked

  • Mature, proven existing products rather than new tooling, comparing versions that differ in build and durability rather than near-identical low-cost listings.
  • Whether the three pieces could come from different specialist makers and be consolidated into one kit in China.
  • The likely failure points: fabric damage and edge finish on the scraper, the self-cleaning mechanism on the roller, and pin smoothness and the release button on the brush.
  • Which product-safety rules apply. CE or UKCA marking should not be assumed for manual consumer products; GB general product-safety and traceability duties are the baseline.
  • Sample shipping costs against the 12 kg minimum air-freight charge.

What we found

  • We shortlisted nine options, three for each piece. The buyer said the indicative prices were broadly within expectations.
  • Because the samples are worth little next to the 12 kg minimum air charge, it made sense to send all nine together and compare them in hand rather than narrow down from photos.
  • At the buyer's request we also looked for a softer silicone or rubber scraper as an alternative to the three metal ones.
  • We suggested standard colours and plain packaging for the first validation run; branding and custom packaging can follow once the products have proved themselves.

Status

Sample quote sent. The buyer is completing their funding and comparing options before authorising samples; nothing has been bought yet.

What this means for other buyers

  • For a new product, sample mature existing designs before paying for tooling or custom packaging.
  • Kit components can come from different specialist makers, provided someone checks them and consolidates them before shipment.
  • Check certificates against the actual product. A supplier's certificate only helps if it covers that exact item.
