What is PPAP? Evidence and submission levels

PPAP means Production Part Approval Process. It brings together evidence that a supplier can consistently make parts to the agreed engineering requirements. For a UK buyer, agree the evidence, submission level and approval authority before ordering. Discuss factory evidence coordination with Cambridge China Bridge.

What PPAP proves

PPAP addresses consistent conformity to engineering drawings and specifications. Read the evidence package as a connected account of the part, its manufacturing process and the controls that keep production within the agreed requirements.

A good-looking sample leaves questions about repeatability unanswered. Ask which production site, tooling, materials and drawing revision the submission covers. Keep separate product safety and compliance reviews alongside the engineering approval, as explained in the site's production introduction guide.

Agree the evidence package before quoting

Ask your engineering or quality owner to identify the applicable PPAP manual and customer requirements. Send the factory an agreed document checklist before it quotes. Mark each item as applicable or explain its exclusion; name its owner and the evidence needed for review.

For the review, ask for the released drawing and changes, process flow, process risk assessment, control plan, dimensional results, material and performance results, measurement system studies and process capability evidence where applicable. Include sample identification and the supplier's signed part submission warrant. This is a buying checklist, not a substitute for the applicable manual.

What the submission level means

Treat the submission level as an instruction about the evidence presented for customer review. Distinguish documents sent with the submission from records and samples retained at the factory. Do not interpret a smaller submission as permission to omit the underlying work.

Ask the buyer's quality owner to confirm the level and its submission and retention checklist against the applicable manual. Agree any customer additions, access to retained records and arrangements for a factory review. Write these into the order rather than accepting an unexplained promise to provide PPAP.

Check that the evidence belongs together

Trace a critical drawing characteristic through the measurement result, measuring equipment, process risk assessment and control plan. Ask what happens when that characteristic fails. Investigate mismatched revisions, reports from a different site and results without identifiable production samples before accepting the package.

Use how to write a first-article inspection brief to define the checks on the submitted parts. First-article results help demonstrate conformity of those parts; review process and measurement evidence as well before deciding whether repeat production is ready.

Turn the review into a release decision

Record the reviewed package revision, unresolved issues, authorised approver and permitted next step. If you allow limited work while issues remain open, specify its boundaries and the evidence needed to close them. Follow new product introduction with a Chinese factory for the wider production-release gates.

Agree which proposed material, tooling, process or site changes need review and refreshed evidence before use. Keep shipment approval separate from permission to manufacture. Use making bulk production match the sample for the ongoing sample and shipment checks.

Frequently asked questions

What does PPAP stand for?

Production Part Approval Process. It brings together evidence supporting consistent manufacture to agreed engineering drawings and specifications.

Which PPAP submission level should I request?

Ask your quality owner to confirm it against the applicable manual and customer requirements. Agree what is submitted, what is retained and how you can review retained evidence.

Is first-article inspection enough for PPAP?

First-article results address the submitted parts. Review the agreed process, measurement and control evidence too before approving repeat production.

Does a signed PPAP warrant release my order?

Ask for the authorised customer's recorded decision against the package revision. State separately what may be manufactured and what may be dispatched.
