UK VAT on craft patterns and 3D-print downloads
An automatic download is normally a digital service, rather than a physical import. UK consumer purchases are liable to UK VAT; business purchases may require reverse-charge accounting. Budget for 20% unless a different rate applies, and check who accounts for the tax. Discuss any linked factory order with Cambridge China Bridge.

Identify what you are buying
HMRC’s digital-service definition covers automatic internet delivery with minimal or no human intervention. A ready-made craft pattern or print file supplied this way normally fits that definition. Ask for separate descriptions of the download, any commissioned design work and any physical product.
For a file-only purchase, there is no parcel to clear through customs. If the seller also ships a printed pattern, kit or finished object, assess that physical supply separately using our UK import duty and VAT guide.
Check the rate rather than the file format
Digital services supplied to UK consumers are liable to UK VAT. The standard rate is 20%, but the content matters: a download is not automatically standard-rated or zero-rated simply because it is a document. Ask the supplier to explain any different rate.
HMRC specifically excludes electronically supplied plans or drawings for industrial, architectural, engineering, commercial or similar purposes from publication zero-rating. For a commercial print file, do not assume that an accompanying instruction document makes the purchase a zero-rated book.
Find out whether the seller or platform accounts for VAT
For consumer downloads, HMRC says the platform supplies the consumer when it identifies the seller but sets the general terms, authorises payment or handles delivery or download. In that situation, the platform accounts for the VAT. For a direct purchase, ask the seller how it accounts for UK VAT.
Before paying, ask whose name will appear as supplier on the receipt and whether the displayed total includes UK VAT. Keep the answer with the order. Our guide to sourcing agents and sellers explains the separate contracting question for any related factory order.
Tell the supplier when you are buying for business
For a taxable service supplied in the UK by an overseas supplier to a UK business, reverse-charge accounting can apply: the buyer accounts for VAT rather than simply paying seller-charged VAT. Give the seller or platform your business details and VAT number, if registered, and ask it to confirm the treatment before payment.
If your business is not VAT registered, overseas business-service purchases can still affect whether you must register. Ask your accountant to review the purchase. Our reverse-charge VAT guide covers the related issue for Chinese sourcing-agent fees.

Check and keep the receipt
Compare the receipt with the checkout screen: supplier name, file description, purchase date, currency, amount before VAT, VAT rate and amount, and final total. Ask for the supplier’s VAT registration details where UK VAT is charged. These are practical checks, not a substitute for confirming the correct tax treatment.
If the receipt merely says “tax”, ask which tax and country it refers to and who accounts for it. If both seller and platform request VAT, ask them to reconcile the same transaction before making an additional payment. Keep the receipt, payment confirmation and their replies together.
Frequently asked questions
Do I pay UK VAT on a download from China?
UK consumer digital-service purchases are liable to UK VAT. Business purchases may instead require reverse-charge accounting. Check the purchase type and supplier before paying.
Is VAT on craft patterns always 20%?
Budget for the standard rate of 20%, but ask about the content’s classification. A document download is not automatically a zero-rated publication.
Does the seller or marketplace collect VAT?
For consumer downloads, a platform that sets the terms, authorises payment or handles delivery can be responsible. Check the named supplier and VAT breakdown on the receipt.
Do I pay customs duty on a print-file download?
A file-only download has no physical parcel to clear. If the seller also sends a kit or printed object, check that physical purchase separately under the goods-import rules.
