UK spare parts rules for appliances bought from China

Yes, for covered appliances, but access depends on the product category and whether you are an end-user or professional repairer. Direct importing can also make your business responsible for compliance. Confirm the model, responsible supplier and repair route before ordering. Put these checks in your brief to Cambridge China Bridge.

Check the appliance category and destination

For Great Britain, relevant categories include household dishwashers, washing machines and washer-dryers, refrigerating appliances, and electronic displays. The wider ecodesign regulations also cover commercial refrigeration used for direct sales, welding equipment and electric motors. Check the exact product scope rather than treating every electrical appliance as covered by the same spare-parts requirements.

This guide focuses on Great Britain. Confirm the applicable product rules separately for Northern Ireland. Ask the supplier to identify the exact model, intended use and destination market before accepting a general claim that the product meets UK requirements.

Identify who carries the compliance responsibility

Official guidance makes the manufacturer, authorised representative or importer that first places a regulated product on the market, or puts it into service, responsible for compliance. If your business imports directly from China, establish whether your business takes that role, including when buying an appliance for its own use.

Ask for the responsible entity's name, address and written explanation of its role. Separately identify who actually supplies parts and handles technical enquiries. Keep the compliance evidence with the model records using our technical compliance file guide. A factory contact alone does not tell you who will organise a local repair.

Separate end-user parts from professional repairs

The rules specify parts that must be available to end-users as well as professional repairers. The examples below help you ask specific questions; check the complete list for your appliance before ordering.

Try the proposed ordering route with your exact model reference. Ask for a matching part reference and replacement instructions, then have your intended repairer assess the job. Being able to order a component does not tell you whether your staff can fit it safely.

Examples of parts required to be available to end-users
Appliance categoryExamples
Household washing machines and washer-dryersDoors, door hinges, door seals, other seals, door locking assemblies and plastic peripherals such as detergent dispensers
Household dishwashersDoor hinges and seals, drain filters, interior racks, baskets and lids, other seals and spray arms
Refrigerating appliancesDoor handles, door hinges, trays and baskets

Prove that your repairer can obtain information

For refrigerating appliances, the rules require access to repair and maintenance information for professional repairers and a website registration process. End-user access to the listed parts should therefore not be treated as access to the full professional service information.

Before ordering, ask your repairer to test the supplier's registration route and request information for the proposed model. Ask whether diagnosis needs proprietary software, an account or special equipment. Request an example service document and check that it describes the actual appliance, rather than a visually similar model.

Turn the legal baseline into an order decision

Ask the supplier to identify the applicable parts list, availability period and its starting point for your model. Then request current ordering instructions, a parts quotation and confirmation of delivery arrangements. Put the model identity and promised support route into your product specification.

Budget separately for diagnosis, parts, labour, freight and downtime. If you cannot demonstrate a workable repair route before payment, reconsider the model or agree additional support. Our spare-parts planning guide covers the parts register, replenishment terms and discontinuation arrangements that turn this check into ongoing support.

Frequently asked questions

Do UK spare-parts rules cover every appliance?

Check the exact product category and scope. Do not accept a general claim that all electrical appliances have the same parts and repair-information requirements.

Who is responsible if I import an appliance myself?

The manufacturer, authorised representative or importer first placing the regulated product on the market or putting it into service is responsible. Establish whether your business takes that role.

Can I buy washing machine spare parts myself?

For covered household models, the end-user list includes doors, hinges, seals, door locking assemblies and plastic peripherals such as detergent dispensers. Check compatibility and the replacement instructions.

What should I check before ordering from China?

Confirm the exact model, responsible entity, end-user parts route and professional repair access. Ask your intended repairer to test the support route, and budget for the complete repair.
