Sourcing woven Wilton carpet from China

Woven Wilton carpet from China carries a flat 8% UK duty across the wool and synthetic pile lines shown here, with no recorded trade remedies or suspensions. Carpet supplied for fitting in buildings needs a declaration of performance and a fire class. Check construction, fibre and roll consistency. Cambridge China Bridge sources woven Wilton carpet.

Flat 8% duty on the selected Wilton lines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, the selected woven pile-carpet lines under heading 5702 carried 8% duty for goods from China. They cover wool or fine animal hair and man-made fibres, made up or not made up. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension is recorded for these lines.

The tariff attaches CITES import control to the selected wool or fine animal hair lines. Identify any animal fibre and ask your customs broker to confirm whether CITES permits or other documents are required. Listed-species material can require permits, and UK Border Force checks and endorses CITES documents. The data also lists cultural-property export licensing and, for the wool lines, CITES export control; these are export entries.

Wilton is a construction description, rather than a separate commodity line in these facts. Confirm the fibre, woven pile construction and made-up status through finding your commodity code. For the wider heading, see the woven Axminster carpet guide.

Specify the Wilton weave and installation

Ask for a construction sample showing the face and reverse, alongside the yarn specification. Agree pile fibre composition, cut or loop pile, pile height, pile mass, density, backing and edge finish. Specify roll width, usable length, pattern repeat, pile direction and how adjoining lengths should match. Retain an approved sample and layout drawing.

For carpet supplied for fitting in buildings, confirm with the relevant authority whether a declaration of performance and reaction to fire classification are required for the proposed construction and backing, and obtain the applicable documents. CE marking remains available for construction products in Great Britain. Fibre labels must show fibre content. Agree evidence for wear, colour fastness and dimensional stability with the installer before production; testing and certification support can help define the brief.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 3,000 square metres of synthetic woven Wilton carpet under 5702 32 00 00, invoiced at £21,000 free on board, with £3,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £24,500. Duty at 8% is £1,960. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £26,460, so it is £5,292. Import taxes total £7,252; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,960 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Weave and pile: compare the face and reverse with the approved Wilton sample. Check missing pile, exposed ground yarn, loose yarn ends, uneven pile and the specified pile mass.

Pattern and colour: lay adjoining lengths together in the intended pile direction. Check pattern alignment, bowing, skew and shade differences between rolls under consistent lighting.

Dimensions and condition: measure usable width and length, check edges and roll identification, and unroll arrival samples to look for ripples, crushed pile, dampness, mould or backing damage.

Documents and labels: match fibre labels, batch records and performance reports to the supplied carpet and backing. Compare cleaning and dimensional-stability results with the agreed specification. Use an agreed quality inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A supplier may use Wilton as a sales description while offering a different construction. A face photograph can conceal the difference, so approve a physical sample with the reverse visible. Low pile mass, loose yarn and uneven weaving can leave the delivery looking unlike the approved sample.

Pattern distortion and mixed dye batches become obvious at seams. Short rolls disrupt the cutting plan, while uneven tension or backing shrinkage produces ripples. Agree rejection criteria for construction, dimensions, shade and pattern matching, then check arrival samples before cutting or fitting.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on Wilton carpet from China?

The selected wool and synthetic woven pile-carpet lines carry 8% duty. The supplied tariff facts record no anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension for these lines.

Does Wilton carpet have its own commodity code?

The supplied tariff lines do not name Wilton separately. Confirm the woven pile construction, fibre and made-up status; the wool Axminster lines are separately named.

Does Wilton carpet need a fire report?

For carpet supplied for fitting in buildings, confirm with the relevant authority whether a declaration of performance and reaction to fire classification are required. Check that any supporting report covers the supplied construction and backing.

How do I check patterned Wilton carpet before fitting?

Lay adjoining lengths together with matching pile direction. Compare pattern repeat, alignment, bowing, skew and shade, then check usable roll dimensions against the cutting plan.
