Duty and classification for reed ceiling mats

Heading 4601 covers plaiting materials bound in parallel strands or woven into sheets, including mats and matting. Finished reed ceiling mats belong among the other vegetable material lines, subject to their construction. The table also includes other reed sheet products for comparison; these are classification alternatives, rather than interchangeable codes for finished mats.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, all listed lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls. This describes the tariff record, rather than approval for a ceiling installation. Non-exempt solid wood packaging used for imports into Great Britain must meet the international phytosanitary packaging standard.

Confirm the commodity code using material details, photographs and the weave or binding method. Specify whether the shipment contains finished mats or other sheet material. For the wider heading, see reed fencing rolls.

Specify the reed, binding and ceiling installation

State whether the mat uses whole or split reeds, the agreed reed diameter range, weave density, binding material, edge finish and finished dimensions. Record the acceptable colour variation, drying method, moisture limit and any coating or treatment. Approve a sample against the intended backing and fixings, including how cut edges are secured.

Ask the project designer to review fire evidence for the proposed ceiling installation before ordering. Request a report identifying the supplied reed, treatment, backing, orientation and fixings. Ask a compliance adviser whether construction product marking and performance documentation apply to the proposed product and use.

Confirm the applicable UK REACH restrictions on dimethyl fumarate with HSE. Ask the factory to identify any anti-mould treatment or sachets and arrange appropriate testing. Include drying and packing instructions in the order rather than relying on an unspecified anti-mould treatment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 2,000 woven reed ceiling mats under 4601 29 90 00, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,200, so it is £1,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Reeds and weave: compare whole or split reeds, density and colour with the approved sample; check for crushed stalks, sharp fragments, loose binding and unravelled edges.

Dimensions and mounting: measure mats after unrolling and check squareness, curl and joint alignment; trial the agreed backing, fixings and cut-edge treatment.

Moisture and condition: measure sampled mats against the agreed moisture limit; check for mould, musty smells, insect holes and powder deposits before loading and on arrival.

Treatments and packing: match treatment records and test reports to the supplied product; inspect cartons for undeclared sachets and check compliance marks on non-exempt solid wood pallets or crates.

What goes wrong

Damp mats can arrive mouldy or curled. Crushed reeds leave uneven gaps, loose bindings allow edges to open, and colour changes between batches become conspicuous across a ceiling. Record defects before installation and compare the shipment with the retained sample. Use a product-specific brief for quality inspection.

A supplier may offer a generic fire certificate without identifying the mat or installation tested. Treat this as unresolved evidence: have the designer review the report against the actual backing, treatment and fixings before accepting the batch for ceiling use.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on woven reed ceiling mats from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty on every heading 4601 line, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. The read date is 4 October 2026.

Which commodity code covers woven reed ceiling mats?

Compare 4601 29 10 00 for mats made from plaits with 4601 29 90 00 for other mats. Confirm the construction and finished form with your customs broker before declaring the goods.

Can I use a supplier's fire certificate for a reed ceiling?

Ask the project designer to review whether the report identifies the supplied mat and covers its intended treatment, backing, orientation and fixings. A generic certificate leaves these checks unresolved.

How do I stop reed ceiling mats arriving mouldy?

Agree drying, a moisture limit and packing instructions. Inspect sampled mats before loading and on arrival. Ask for details of anti-mould treatments and sachets rather than accepting an unspecified chemical treatment.
