Zero duty on woven ramie terry fabric

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 5802 covers terry towelling and similar woven terry fabrics, excluding narrow fabrics of heading 5806, and tufted textile fabrics, excluding products of heading 5703. Woven ramie terry falls within the other textile materials description under 5802 20 00 00. The table shows purchasing variants sharing that tariff line.

The supplied tariff record gives 0% duty for goods from China and lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls for this line. Zero customs duty does not remove import VAT. See UK import duty and VAT.

Confirm the commodity code using the actual fibre composition and construction, especially for blends. Knitted terry and finished towels need separate classification. For the wider heading context, see the woven linen terry fabric guide.

Specify ramie yarns, loops and finish

Ask the mill to identify the fibres in the ground, warp, weft and loop yarns rather than accepting a general ramie description. Specify weight per square metre, usable width, roll length, yarn count, loop height and density, looped faces, colour and finish. Approve a physical sample and agree limits for shrinkage, absorbency, pulled loops and shade variation.

For fabric sold to consumers in Great Britain, the label must show fibre content. Consumer products must also be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. Ask for composition verification and dye test reports suited to the intended skin contact. Keep the approved sample and reports with the order.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 2,000 square metres of woven ramie terry fabric in rolls, illustrative under 5802 20 00 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £400 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,400. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,400, so it is £1,280. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fibre identity: compare the tested composition with the order and labelling. Check that the mill has distinguished ramie from linen and disclosed any cotton or synthetic ground yarns.

Roll dimensions: measure usable width, roll length and weight per square metre across sampled rolls. Record short lengths, damaged edges and discrepancies against the packing list.

Loops and surface: check loop height, density, missing loops, snagging and weaving faults along the fabric. Compare the handle and shade with the approved sample.

Wash performance: wash samples using the agreed procedure, then check shrinkage, absorbency, colour transfer and loop retention against the order. Arrange checks through the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A ramie description can conceal different fibres in the ground and pile, so the delivered fabric does not match the sample or composition statement. Finishing can also mask a harsh handle or poor absorbency until washing. Check the washed sample before approving bulk fabric.

Loose loops snag during handling, uneven loop density creates thin areas, and shade differences become visible when rolls are cut together. Inspect rolls before cutting, retain lot identification and separate suspect fabric while the mill investigates.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on woven ramie terry fabric from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 0% under 5802 20 00 00 for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing measures. Import VAT is separate.

Is ramie terry fabric the same as linen terry?

Ramie and linen are different fibres. Ask for the ground and loop yarn composition and verify it against the approved sample rather than relying on a supplier's fabric name.

How do I check whether ramie terry loops will pull out?

Inspect for loose and missing loops, compare construction with the approved sample, and check loop retention after the agreed wash test before cutting the rolls.

Does ramie terry sold by the metre need a fibre label?

Yes, fabric sold to consumers needs fibre content labelling. Verify the composition before preparing the label, especially where the ground and loop yarns differ.
