Duty on woven cleaning tabards

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 8 October 2026, heading 6211 covers tracksuits, ski suits and swimwear, and other garments. This guide selects its cotton and man-made fibre occupational clothing lines for woven cleaning tabards. These are classification candidates: confirm the garment's construction, fibre composition and tariff category rather than relying on the supplier's description.

The selected lines carry 12% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. The suspension under 6211 42 10 00 is restricted to qualifying medical scrub tops and bottoms; do not apply it to ordinary cleaning tabards. All selected lines attach a seal-products import control. Seal products can only enter Great Britain for sale under the Inuit and other indigenous communities’ exemption. If any seal-derived material is proposed, confirm eligibility and documentation with your customs broker before ordering.

Send the broker a garment photograph, fabric composition and construction details to confirm the commodity code. For the wider product family, see branded and embroidered workwear. For the reverse trade in functional workwear, see our guide to exporting technical clothing to China. For laboratory workwear, see our woven laboratory coat sourcing guide.

Specify coverage, side fastenings and washing

Specify woven fabric construction, fibre proportions, fabric weight, colour, front and back length, neckline opening and side overlap. Agree measurements over the uniform actually worn underneath. State whether side tabs use buttons, poppers or hook-and-loop fastenings, and approve their adjustment range on a fit sample.

Set pocket dimensions and reinforcement for the cleaning items staff carry. Agree binding, seam construction, logo position and a wash trial using the intended laundry process. The fibre label must show fibre content, including any fur or other animal parts. Agree care instructions that match the approved wash trial.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 500 woven cotton cleaning tabards under 6211 42 10 00, invoiced at £5,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £5,800. Duty at 12% is £696. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,496, so it is £1,299.20. Import taxes total £1,995.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £696 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: measure garments from each size against the approved chart; check neckline access, side overlap and movement over a uniform.

Fastenings: operate side closures repeatedly; check attachment stitching, adjustment and whether exposed hooks snag the fabric.

Pockets and seams: load pockets with the intended contents; check corner reinforcement, binding and loose stitching.

Washing and labels: compare shrinkage, colour bleeding, puckering and closure function after the agreed wash trial; check fibre labels and logo placement. Use the quality inspection guide to organise checks.

What goes wrong

A tabard approved over a light shirt may fit poorly over a work uniform. Short side tabs leave gaps, narrow neck openings make changing awkward, and pocket corners tear when loaded. Test the sample in the intended working outfit before approving the size chart.

Bulk fabric can shrink differently from the sample, leaving twisted binding or puckered embroidery. Side fastenings may collect lint or snag neighbouring garments in washing. Retain the approved sample and agree measurable acceptance criteria for the bulk wash trial.
