8% duty for the relevant textile lines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 5702 covers woven textile floor coverings, not tufted or flocked, whether made up or not. This guide concerns textile rugs sold as bamboo, including bamboo-derived viscose. The table compares flatwoven textile routes according to material and whether the goods are made up. For rugs made from bamboo strips, ask your broker to check the classification separately; do not assume these textile rates apply.

The selected lines carry 8% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure or suspension recorded. The other-textile lines attach a cat and dog fur import control: imports of that fur and products made from it are banned, including supplies from China. Specify no such material in the rug or trim. The snapshot also lists cultural-object export licensing and, on the other-textile lines, fur export controls; ask your broker to confirm their relevance before any re-export.

Send your broker the surface material, yarn description, weave photographs, backing details and finished dimensions to confirm the commodity code. Compare the wider heading in the woven seagrass rugs guide. For strip-based products, also consult the bamboo mats and screens guide.

Specify the bamboo surface and backing

Ask whether the walking surface uses bamboo strips, mechanically extracted fibre or bamboo-derived viscose yarn. Record the actual material rather than accepting a bamboo product name. Agree the weave, finished size, squareness, colour sample, edge binding, backing material and cleaning method. Keep an approved sample that includes the backing and bound corners.

Consumer rugs supplied in Great Britain must be safe under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. Check slipping and curled edges in the intended setting. For textile floor coverings, the fibre label must show fibre content; confirm with Trading Standards how this applies to the use surface. Agree checks for colour transfer, cleaning damage and backing marks before production.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative wholesale order of 3,000 finished flatwoven bamboo-derived viscose rugs under 5702 92 90 00, invoiced at £45,000 free on board, with £5,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £50,000. Duty at 8% is £4,000. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £54,000, so it is £10,800. Import taxes total £14,800; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £4,000 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Surface and weave: compare the actual surface material, weave tightness and colour with the approved sample; check loose yarns, gaps and uneven texture.

Shape and edges: measure finished dimensions and squareness, unroll the rugs and check that corners and binding lie flat without loose stitching.

Backing and cleaning: check backing adhesion, grip and floor marking on the intended flooring; clean samples by the agreed method and inspect colour transfer and distortion.

Arrival and labels: inspect for damp packing, mould, odour and transit creases; compare the use-surface fibre label and care instructions with the ordered construction.

What goes wrong

A bamboo description can hide a different construction from the approved sample. Strip-based mats, fibre yarn rugs and viscose rugs need different purchase specifications. Loose weaving, uneven backing and tight binding can leave a rug distorted or curled. Damp packing can bring mould and odour into the warehouse.

Backings may peel or mark floors, while colours can transfer during cleaning. Ask the factory to correct the cause on a replacement sample before releasing the batch. Use an agreed inspection brief to record defects against the approved construction.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For own-brand ranges, see sourcing for brands.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on woven bamboo rugs from China?

The selected textile lines carry 8% duty, with no trade remedy or suspension recorded in the supplied snapshot. Confirm textile construction first; these rates should not be assumed for bamboo-strip mats.

Does the name bamboo rug establish its commodity code?

No. Ask for the actual surface material and construction. Have your broker distinguish bamboo strips from textile yarn and confirm the finished product against the tariff description.

What fibre label does a bamboo textile rug need?

The label should accurately describe the fibre composition of the use surface. Check the actual fibre rather than copying the supplier's bamboo product name.

What should I check when bamboo rugs arrive?

Unroll samples and check flatness, dimensions, binding, loose yarns, backing adhesion and floor marking. Inspect the packing for dampness and mould, and compare colours and labels with the approved sample.
