Duty and controls for wooden easels

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 4421 covers other articles of wood. The relevant bamboo, fibreboard and residual wooden-article lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no recorded anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension. The table separates material choices and easel formats; the wooden formats share a code.

The residual line carries CITES import control. Check the species and applicable listing with APHA before ordering; listed species can require permits. The tariff also attaches a torture-and-repression import prohibition to the bamboo and residual lines, plus cultural-object and torture-related export controls to the relevant lines. Ask your customs broker to confirm their applicability to the actual goods.

Confirm the commodity code using the material, construction and intended use rather than the supplier's description alone. For accompanying painting supplies, see bookbinding cloth and artist canvas.

Specify the frame, canvas support and locks

State the timber species, solid wood or board construction, finish, assembled footprint, folded dimensions and intended canvas sizes. Describe the canvas ledge, upper clamp, tilt adjustment and locking mechanism. Agree the working load and stability checks using the canvases your customers will actually use.

Businesses importing consumer products are responsible for their safety. For easels, assess tipping, slipping supports, exposed screw ends, splinters and finger traps during adjustment or folding. Keep an approved assembly sample and agree clear assembly and adjustment instructions with the factory.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 50 wooden studio easels, illustrative order under 4421 99 99 99, invoiced at £3,500 free on board, with £1,120 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,620. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,620, so it is £924. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Frame: check species against the order, straightness, joint fit, cracks, splinters, mould and finish transfer onto canvas.

Stability: assemble on a level surface, fit the intended canvas and check rocking and tipping through the agreed adjustment range.

Locks: check the ledge and upper clamp hold position, knobs tighten properly and repeated adjustment does not strip threads or loosen joints.

Packing: check hardware completeness, assembly instructions and protection for projecting parts; repeat functional checks on arrival. Agree these checks in the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

An easel can look acceptable folded yet rock after assembly. Warped legs, uneven joints and loose pivots cause movement; shallow clamp engagement lets the canvas slip. Rough ledges damage canvas edges, while projecting screws and folding joints create injury risks.

Approve a fully assembled sample, then check production units with the intended canvas fitted. Damp timber can arrive mouldy or distort in storage, and loose hardware can scratch the finish in transit. Record arrival defects before distributing the batch.
