Duty on empty wooden ammunition packing boxes

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, wooden cases, boxes, crates and similar packing under 4415 10 10 00 carried 0% duty from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension for this line. This guide concerns empty wooden ammunition packing boxes.

The tariff attaches CITES import and export controls to this code. CITES specimens require an import permit, so identify the timber species and ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable documents and restrictions before shipment. The record also lists a cultural-object export licence control; confirm its relevance with your broker if you plan to export older boxes.

Heading 4415 also covers other wooden packing. The table shows box variants sharing the same code, rather than separate tariff subdivisions. Confirm the commodity code against the construction and intended use. See wooden pallets and crates for the wider heading.

Specify the box, inserts and closure

Write down the internal clearance, external dimensions, board or panel thickness, timber species, lid arrangement, hinges, catches, handles and reinforcement. Define the inserts, dividers and cushioning against the intended contents. Agree the loaded handling and stacking checks with the buyer, using inert substitutes during factory inspection.

For boxes imported as products onto the GB market, confirm timber legality due-diligence obligations with the relevant authority; collect species and harvest-country information, assess illegal-harvest risk and keep supporting records. Specify debarked, treated timber and treatment marks for solid-wood packing. When wooden packaging carries goods into Great Britain, confirm the applicable treatment and marking requirements, including any exemptions, with APHA before shipment.

Most packaging types for dangerous goods must be design type tested and certified for particular contents. Before ordering boxes for ammunition carriage, ask a dangerous-goods adviser to review the proposed packaging arrangement. Request the supporting report and assembly instructions, and compare them with the box, inserts and closure being purchased.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 2,000 empty wooden ammunition packing boxes, illustrative order under 4415 10 10 00, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £3,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £21,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,500, so it is £4,300. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: measure internal clearance, panel thickness and divider positions against the drawing; check the lid closes without crushing the inserts.

Timber: check moisture against the agreed specification, inspect for mould, splits and insect damage, and match the species to the timber documents.

Fittings: operate hinges and catches, inspect handle attachments and reinforcement, and check for projecting nails or screws.

Documents and marks: compare the finished construction with the supplied packaging report and instructions. Check treatment marks on solid-wood packing; a certificate cannot replace the treatment mark.

What goes wrong

Wet timber shrinks around fittings, lids bind, thin panels split at handle attachments and inaccurate dividers leave contents loose. A sample may have stronger catches or thicker panels than the production batch. Keep an agreed sample and inspect production boxes before loading and again on arrival.

A factory may provide a packaging report for a different box or insert arrangement. Have the adviser review substitutions before accepting them. Timber documents may identify the Chinese manufacturer without identifying the harvest country; resolve gaps before shipment.
