Duty on women's woven denim shirts

Heading 6206 covers women's or girls' woven blouses, shirts and shirt-blouses. This guide concerns women's denim shirts. Ordinary cotton versions fall within the cotton, other line; the table also includes specialist man-made-fibre, flax or ramie and hand-printed batik variants. Select a line from the actual fibre composition and production method, rather than the description 'denim' alone.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, every supplied line carried 12% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or tariff suspension is listed. No import control is attached to the table's selected lines. Import VAT is normally 20%; see import duty and VAT.

Elsewhere in this heading, the wool or fine animal hair and other textile materials lines have CITES import and export controls attached. CITES specimens require an import permit; confirm applicability and the shipment documents with your customs broker if those materials are proposed. Confirm the finished shirt's commodity code. For the related men's product family, see men's woven denim shirts.

Specify the denim, wash and women's fit

Specify fibre composition, fabric weight, weave, stretch or non-stretch construction, indigo shade and wash finish. Approve a finished, washed sample, with reference samples showing acceptable shade variation. Define chest, waist, hip, shoulder, sleeve and shirt length measurements, plus tolerances for each size. Check bust darts, placket overlap and button spacing on a fitting sample.

The fibre label must show fibre content, including fur and other animal parts. Verify bulk fabric before approving label artwork. UK REACH restrictions can limit, ban or set conditions on substances; ask a laboratory to assess the proposed dyes, finishes and metal fasteners against applicable restrictions. Specify care instructions supported by wash trials and keep the approved fabric and trim records.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 1,000 women's cotton woven denim shirts under 6206 30 00 90, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,600. Duty at 12% is £792. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £7,392, so it is £1,478.40. Import taxes total £2,270.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £792 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Shade and transfer: compare washed shirts across cartons against approved references. Check dry and wet rubbing onto light fabric, wash bleeding and staining around contrasting stitching or labels.

Fit and washing: measure every size in the inspection sample before and after the agreed care wash. Check bust gaping, sleeve length, seam twisting and whether the hem or placket distorts.

Construction: check collar symmetry, pocket alignment, seam puckering, skipped stitches and loose threads. Test button attachment and popper operation; inspect metal edges for burrs.

Labels and packing: compare fibre labels with fabric records, check size and care information, and reconcile carton contents with the packing list. On arrival, inspect for dampness, mould and damaged fasteners. See quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A wash finish approved on a sample can vary across bulk production, leaving mismatched sleeves, pockets or replacement stock. Dark denim can transfer colour onto pale clothing. Set shade references and rubbing checks before production, then inspect finished shirts from different cartons.

Fit can change after washing, particularly at the bust, sleeves and placket. Popper attachment can damage lightweight denim, while heavy seams can pucker. Approve the finished wash and fasteners together, and compare arrival samples with the retained approval sample before releasing stock.
