Sourcing switchgear chassis from China
Withdrawable switchgear chassis from China carry 0% UK duty under the relevant heading 8538 lines. Classify the chassis by its supplied condition and intended use; compliance of the finished assembly must also be addressed. Cambridge China Bridge sources withdrawable switchgear chassis.

Zero duty on relevant chassis lines
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 21 October 2026, heading 8538 covers parts suitable solely or principally for apparatus of headings 8535, 8536 or 8537. Relevant candidates for a bare chassis are the unequipped bases line and the residual other-parts line. The table shows component descriptions sharing these lines, rather than separate tariff categories.
Both candidate lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff facts list no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls on either line. A complete equipped switchboard belongs in heading 8537, as explained in the wider switchgear parts guide.
Confirm the commodity code using drawings, intended apparatus and a packing list identifying everything fitted to the chassis. Do not classify a chassis with a breaker or electrical accessories solely from the supplier's description of a bare mechanical frame.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unequipped chassis constituting a base for switchgear panels | 8538 10 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Withdrawable mechanical chassis classified as other switchgear parts | 8538 90 99 99 | 0% | None |
Specify the cabinet interface and interlocks
Identify the exact cabinet and breaker model, drawing revision, mounting pattern, rail spacing, wheel profile and permitted load. Specify disconnected, test and service positions, travel stops, position indication, racking handle interface and the agreed interlock sequence. Record whether the order includes rails, shutters, earthing contacts, auxiliary plugs or only the moving chassis.
Agree a sample fit in the intended compartment before production. Ask the panel builder to assess the finished assembly's applicable safety requirements. Official guidance says products imported into Great Britain for further manufacture are not considered placed on the market; the manufacturer of the finished product is responsible for compliance before placing it on the market. Separately supplied components may themselves need conformity assessment and marking.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of withdrawable mechanical chassis for a panel-building business under 8538 90 99 99, invoiced at £36,000 free on board, with £5,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £41,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £41,000, so it is £8,200. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Fit: compare mounting holes, rail spacing, frame squareness and wheel alignment with the approved drawing; trial-fit the chassis in the intended compartment.
Movement: rack through the agreed positions with the intended load, checking binding, backlash, stops, position indication and handle engagement.
Interlocks: demonstrate the agreed permitted and blocked operations in each position, including withdrawal and shutter actuation where supplied.
Condition: check welds, fasteners, corrosion protection and specified earthing contact operation. During inspection, check that packing restrains the frame without loading wheels or projecting mechanisms.

What goes wrong
A similar-looking chassis can have different rail geometry or interlock timing. It may enter the cabinet but stop short of its service position, leave an auxiliary plug partly engaged or operate a shutter at the wrong point. Accept against the approved interface drawing and a demonstrated operating sequence.
Frame distortion, loose fasteners and damaged wheels can cause uneven movement after delivery. Photograph damage before unpacking and repeat the fit and movement checks on arrival. A successful bare-chassis trial does not demonstrate compliance of the finished switchgear assembly.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on withdrawable switchgear chassis from China?
The relevant heading 8538 lines carry 0% duty. The supplied tariff facts show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls on those lines.
Which commodity code should I use for a bare switchgear chassis?
Check 8538 10 00 00 for an unequipped base and 8538 90 99 99 for other dedicated mechanical parts. Confirm against the actual design, intended apparatus and supplied condition.
Will a replacement chassis fit my existing switchgear?
Require the cabinet and breaker model, interface drawing and revision. Demonstrate loaded movement, position indication and interlock operation in the intended compartment before accepting the design.
Does every bare chassis need its own CE or UKCA marking?
Assess the actual supply. Official guidance says separately supplied components may require individual conformity assessment and marking; products imported for further manufacture are treated differently.
