Sourcing welded steel channels from China

Welded steel channels from China carry 0% UK duty under 7301 20 00 00 in the supplied tariff snapshot. Confirm whether the goods are section stock or components prepared for a structure, because classification and construction-product documentation depend on what is supplied. 0% duty on welded steel channels

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, welded angles, shapes and sections under 7301 20 00 00 carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied snapshot lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, steel measure, suspension or import control. Heading 7301 also covers sheet piling. Only the welded-section line is relevant to this channel guide.

Confirm the manufacturing method and intended supply condition before choosing the commodity code. Non-welded hot-rolled sections belong under different headings, while sections prepared for use in structures can fall under 7308. For the wider welded-section family, see welded steel angles.

Confirm with HMRC or your customs broker whether heading 7301 falls within the iron and steel scope of the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism from 1 January 2027. Ask the supplier for steel origin and emissions data before ordering, and read our UK carbon border adjustment guide.

Specify the channel drawing and welds

Specify overall depth, flange width, web and flange thickness, length, straightness, twist and flange squareness. State the steel grade, weld arrangement, weld size, continuity, end preparation, hole positions and coating. Agree the inspection method and acceptance criteria with the engineer before production.

If supplied as fabricated structural components for buildings or civil works, agree the execution class and confirm with the relevant construction-product authority or conformity assessment body whether the fabricator's certified factory production control evidence, declaration of performance and CE or UKCA marking are required. Ask whether a steel mill certificate alone is sufficient for the supplied components. For legitimately CE-marked construction products supplied in Great Britain, additional UKCA marking is not required.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 50 tonnes of welded steel channels under 7301 20 00 00, invoiced at £32,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £36,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £36,000, so it is £7,200. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Geometry: measure the web, flanges and thicknesses against the approved drawing; check bow, twist and flange squareness before shipment and again on arrival.

Welds: inspect weld size, continuity, visible cracking, undercut and missed lengths; review the agreed non-destructive test results before accepting repairs or coated welds.

Traceability: match channel markings and bundle records to the steel certificates, grade and approved drawings; retain the connection between plate batches and finished channels.

Finish and packing: check coating coverage and agreed thickness, exposed edges, lifting damage and bundle support. Use our inspection guide to plan checks.

What goes wrong

Welding can pull flanges out of square and leave a channel bowed or twisted. An acceptable overall depth can hide an undersized web or flange, while coating can conceal weld repairs. Agree dimensional checks after welding and before coating, then check the finished channels against the same drawing.

Certificates can describe the incoming plate without identifying the finished channels. Prepared structural components can also be quoted as ordinary section stock. Resolve the drawing, supply condition, traceability and documentation before approving production; check dimensions and transport damage again when the bundles arrive.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on welded steel channels from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot shows 0% under 7301 20 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, steel measure, suspension or listed import control.

Are hot-rolled channels classified like welded channels?

Non-welded hot-rolled sections use different headings. Confirm how the channel is made and whether it is prepared for use in a structure before declaring the code.

Do welded structural channels need UKCA as well as CE?

For construction products legitimately bearing CE marking and supplied in Great Britain, additional UKCA marking is not required. Check that the documents cover the supplied structural component.

What should I check when welded channels arrive?

Check bow, twist, flange squareness, thickness, weld condition and coating damage against the approved drawing. Match bundle markings to the certificates and packing records.
